It’s time for change! 🗣

NDIS access has dramatically reduced for people with psychosocial disability over recent years.

People with psychosocial disability who need support have a right to access the NDIS. That right, and their access, is currently being wrongly denied.

As it stands, NDIA policy and process changes are disproportionately and negatively affecting people with psychosocial disability, and the NDIA itself lacks understanding, expertise and focus when it comes to psychosocial disability.

Open Minds and the Australian Psychosocial Alliance is calling for the federal government to:
🟡 resolve access inequities for psychosocial disability

🟡 develop oversight & capabilities to avoid repeating this in the future

🟡 improve outcomes through a specific psychosocial pathway.

This Remembrance Day, at 11am, we pause to honour all who have served and sacrificed for our freedom. Their courage, resilience, and dedication continue to inspire generations.

At Open Minds, we are proud to reflect on our shared history. The Queensland Wattle Day League (now Open Minds) began raising war relief funds during the First World War and whose work over a century ago helped shape the spirit of remembrance and community that endures today.

Just as the golden wattle symbolises hope and renewal, we remember with gratitude those who gave so much, and we recommit ourselves to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of all who carry the legacy of service.

Lest we forget. 🌼

Why are people with psychosocial disability missing out? 🔍

Data from the Australian Psychosocial Alliance’s new Access Denied report shows people with psychosocial disability:
🟡 have decreasing rates of success when applying for and accessing NDIS support

🟡 experience lower overall satisfaction with the NDIS compared to other cohorts.

Open Minds and the Australian Psychosocial Alliance is calling for a resolution of access issues for people with psychosocial disability, a new government-led working group, the creation of a dedicated psychosocial pathway within the NDIS, and an uplift of psychosocial disability capabilities within the NDIA.

What is psychosocial disability? 🤔

Many experts, reviews and reports have stated that assessment of psychosocial disability is more difficult and complex to determine than for other disabilities.

What we do know is that determining psychosocial disability is not a "tick box" process - it requires specialist expertise and knowledge about the relationship between mental health conditions and psychosocial disability.

Unfortunately, this capability is currently missing and the success rate for people with psychosocial disability attempting to access the NDIS is plummeting.

Open Minds and the Australian Psychosocial Alliance is calling for the creation of a dedicated psychosocial pathway within the NDIS, and an uplift of psychosocial disability capabilities and understanding within the NDIA.

The NDIS was meant to support people with permanent and significant disability, including those with psychosocial disability. But hidden changes are creating invisible barriers🔍.

Open Minds, as part of the Australian Psychosocial Alliance, is backing the call for reform. The 'Access Denied' report reveals the growing inequity and offers clear recommendations to fix it. Click the link to read the full report: https://brnw.ch/21wX0Yj
