A randomized clinical trial published in September 2025 showed promising results when comparing acupuncture with conventional medical care for chronic low back pain in older adults.

This systematic review qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated the effectiveness of acupuncture and laser acupuncture for temporomandibular disorders (TMD). After screening RCTs in major databases, 11 studies were included. The results showed that both acupuncture and laser acupuncture are more effective than placebo in short-term pain relief for muscle-related TMD. Additionally, some of the RCTs examined demonstrated that individuals with TMDs of muscular origin did have improvements in their interincisal opening and overall masticatory function. Further rigorous studies are needed for confirmation.
