PA Hospital is expanding access to cutting-edge cancer care, with the launch of a new clinical theranostics service for patients with metastatic neuroendocrine tumours. ❤️

From November 2025, PAH began offering this specialised therapy to all eligible Metro South patients, significantly broadening access to a treatment previously limited to those enrolled in specific clinical trials or requiring travel outside of Metro South HHS.

For patient Pam, the new service means so much more than just advanced treatment.

“When I heard the service was opening here, I was really excited,” she said. “It’s closer to home, and it makes such a difference. Having this service on the south side is so much more convenient, not just for me, but for other patients too.”

Previously, Pam relied on long public transport journeys across the city to attend appointments.

The introduction of the clinical theranostics service at PAH marks a significant milestone for Metro South Health, improving equity of access to highly specialised cancer treatment and reducing the burden of travel for patients living on Brisbane’s south side.

Did you know: Queenslanders have now shared more than 250,000 advance care planning (ACP) documents!

It's a huge milestone for the Statewide Office of Advance Care Planning, a service hosted by Metro South Health.

Every document represents someone taking the time to think about what matters most to them, and making sure their future health care reflects those wishes. 🤍

Dr Greg Parker, Director of the Statewide Office, says the milestone shows just how much awareness and confidence is growing across the community.

“Queenslanders are using these documents to make their future health care wishes known if there is a time when they can’t speak for themselves,” he said.

By sending in copies of ACP documents, Queenslanders are helping ensure authorised health professionals can access their wishes when it is needed most.

And while these conversations can feel big, the team are here to help – with free information, resources, and forms.

It's a timely reminder that life is better with a plan. 🌱Call 1300 007 227 for a free information pack or to learn more.

Getting patients on the road to recovery and back at home as quickly as possible is the name of the game at QEII Hospital, a process Dr Peter Simos and colleagues Nicholas Delaney, Rebecca Cooper, Heidi Wong and Michael Tay are working diligently to perfect. ⭐

The team of innovators was recently recognised for their Plan to Get Me Home project at the Metro South Health SAFEST Regatta.

The project, which focuses on earlier-in-the-day discharge and proactive discharge planning for General Medicine Unit patients, took out the Guiding Light Award for most transferable lesson or approach, along with a $5,000 cash prize.

Program Manager Niamh Boland said the MSH SAFEST Regatta attracted more than 100 clinicians, executives, consumers and system partners to showcase the impact of projects designed to enhance general medicine patient flow.

Congratulations Dr Simos and team! 👏

Fiona Sinclair’s connection with nursing and PA Hospital has been written in the history books as one of the greatest love stories the profession has told. ❤️

After 43 years at PAH, from her training year in 1983 to retirement (officially in May), it is clear that Fiona has a deep affection for PAH and a remarkable connection to the teams she has worked in.

“PA was always my first choice! It is a great place to work, I just love it; it is vibrant and exciting,” she said.

“It was always regarded as the best place to work and PA is also very technologically advanced so it continues to be the cutting-edge destination for advancing your nursing career.”

She acknowledges that breaking the 43-year cycle of coming to PAH every week will be her next challenge, but the foundation of friendship within the team will sustain the relationships for years to come.

Congratulations on your retirement, Fiona! 🫶

Community Service Announcement

Metro South Health’s Public Health Unit is advising that a bat found at Victoria Point Lakeside Shopping Centre on Tuesday, 10 February 2026 has tested positive for Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV).

The risk to the wider community is low. However, anyone who had direct contact with the bat should call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) as soon as possible for assessment.

ABLV is a rare but serious virus, similar to rabies, that can be transmitted through bites or scratches. Residents are reminded never to touch bats or flying foxes, even if they appear sick or injured.

Please ensure children understand they must not touch bats. If children are bitten or scratched by a bat, they should be encouraged to tell their parents, teacher or another responsible adult immediately. Please make sure children know they will not get into trouble.

If you find an injured bat, contact RSPCA Queensland on 1300 ANIMAL or your local wildlife care group.

Shout-out to the amazing Bayside Allied Health team who put a health spin on a reality show! ⭐

Designed to highlight the breadth of Allied Health services, the interactive workshop saw medical interns race through a series of stations, tackling real-world clinical scenarios and problem-solving challenges.

Allied Health Clinical Education Support Officer Kiara Rodrigues said the exercise gave interns a practical introduction to the team.

“By connecting early with Allied Health colleagues, our medical interns gain a stronger appreciation of the expertise across our service and how teamwork supports better outcomes for patients,” she said.

A big thank you to our Allied Health team for creating such an engaging learning experience. 👏

Senior Dietitian and clinician‑researcher Dr Sally Griffin (Ph.D.) is redefining what’s possible in perioperative care through bold, patient‑centred research. 🏥

By 2017, Sally's unconventional journey into dietetics had sparked a new passion built on curiosity and innovation.

“My research interests started later in my dietetics career, and only when I found my passion subject: optimising surgical outcomes for patients living with complex obesity," she explained.

Since then, she has blended clinical insight with research leadership, completing her Ph.D. in 2024 and spearheading projects that bridge dietetics and medicine. 🩺🍎

Today, Sally is leading innovative projects across Metro South, including a new clinical trial exploring remotely delivered preoperative weight loss support for colorectal cancer patients.

“Our team’s greatest strength is our collaborative interdisciplinary power,” she said.

“My research team for my current fellowship is a strong collaboration between surgery and dietetics, all team members are passionate about the same thing. We also have a real respect for each other’s expertise which is amazing to have.”

Shout-out to Dr Sally for driving real improvements in patient care and inspiring the next generation of dietitians. 👏

A new comfort bed has arrived at Beaudesert Hospital, helping patients and families stay close during end-of-life care. 💛🌻

Designed to safely accommodate two people, the bed allows loved ones to lie together, share quiet moments and offer comfort when it’s needed most.

Generously donated by a local family in memory of their husband and father, and facilitated by Kalbar Sunflowers, the bed is part of the hospital's broader commitment to compassionate palliative care, alongside a newly dedicated space created by our caring nursing team.

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make this possible, we know this will make a big difference to families during this difficult time.
