Beautiful little Luca and Sophie were among the 1,096 premmie babies cared for in Logan Hospital’s Neonatal Unit last year.

They recently returned with their mummies Kiah and Chantal for a special visit to celebrate their first birthdays, and to thank the dedicated team that provided the care and support they needed when they arrived a little bit early. 💜

Today we’re celebrating not just these two special birthdays, but also World Prematurity Day and the amazing care our neonatal nurses deliver to our tiniest and most vulnerable community members.

Did you know? In 2024, Ward 2N:
👶 Cared for 1,096 premature babies, including 11 born weighing under 1.5kg and 103 born weighing under 2.5kg
💨 Provided 13,619 hours of respiratory support
🚨 Responded to 517 emergency calls
🤱 Delivered outreach care to 27% of new babies born at Logan Hospital, allowing mums and bubs to stay together on the maternity ward

Please join us in saying Happy Birthday to Luca and Sophie and a huge thank you to our incredible 2N team for the compassion, skill and dedication they show every single day! 💜👏

In an historic milestone, four inpatient beds dedicated to Palliative Care have officially opened at PA Hospital. 🧡

Complete with warm lighting, music connectivity, artwork, optional aromatherapy, silk pillowcases, quilts, and gowns that feel like everyday clothes, the space is thoughtfully curated to foster peace and connection for family members.

PAH Director of Palliative Care and project champion, Dr Ben Gunawan is thrilled to see a generation of vision and advocacy culminate in the launch.

“Twenty years ago, as a medical student in palliative care working under Dr Mark Deuble, I asked why we don’t have inpatient palliative care beds at PAH. While I don’t remember specifically what he said, I do remember the weary sigh he gave before trying to explain why.

“Fast forward seven years and I had not long had the baton passed to me from Mark, I was sitting in the same chair, in the same office, sighing the same sigh to my medical student when I was asked that same question,” he explained.

“I am pleased to report that in 2025, that chain of sighs has been broken; and for the first time since PAH has had a Palliative Care service, we can highlight why we do have beds instead of why not.”

The opening is a testament to the dedication of clinicians, nurses, allied health professionals, operational teams, and leaders across PAH and Metro South Health. 👏

Logan Hospital’s incredible Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Outpatient Service has been recognised as one of Australia’s leading users of the Tristel Trio Trace system. 👏

The milestone highlights the team’s ongoing commitment to excellence in infection control.

The system was introduced in 2015, and in the past year alone the team has completed nearly 5,000 disinfection cycles, helping deliver safer, faster and more cost-effective care for our patients.

Lead RN Leanne Catalano says the award is a proud moment for the team.

“This award reflects not only our technical excellence, but also the pride we take in delivering outstanding care to our patients every day.”

Congratulations to our ENT team for continuing to set the standard in scope safety and quality care! 💙

Measles Alert for Logan

A person in the Logan area has tested positive for measles. They did not know they were infectious and visited these places:

📅 12 November 2025

• Logan Hospital Emergency Department – 12:30 am to 1:00 am, and again from 3:00 pm to 1:00 am (13 November)
• Mullein Pharmacy Hillcrest – 10:30 am to 12:00 pm

📅 14 November 2025

• Logan Hospital Emergency Department – 12:00 am (midnight) to 7:30 am.

If you were at any of these places at the same time, you may have been exposed to measles. Please watch for symptoms.

Early symptoms include:
• fever
• feeling very tired
• runny nose
• wet cough
• sore, red eyes

A few days later, a blotchy red rash can appear. It usually starts on the face and then spreads over the body.

If you develop symptoms, contact your doctor for a test, or call 13HEALTH (13 43 25 84) for advice.

If you think you might have measles, stay away from public places.

Before you visit your doctor, call first so they can prepare and keep others safe. Tell them you may have been in contact with someone who has measles.

PA Hospital is honouring Clinical Nurse Consultant, Dale Mason: a beloved colleague, a remarkable leader, and a force for good.

From her first shift at age 15 in New Zealand, to transforming emergency care across Queensland, Dale’s 50-year career journey was one of compassion, innovation, and quiet brilliance. 💫

Dale didn’t chase accolades; she built systems that worked, uplifted colleagues, and reminded us that nursing is a calling, not just a career.

Her leadership at PAH sparked statewide improvements, and her advocacy for women’s health gave voice to the unheard.

Dale often said her greatest satisfaction came not from one moment, but from “the whole journey through nursing and what nursing can give you.”

She approached life with a soft heart and fierce dedication.

Dale’s legacy lives in every life she touched. 🤍

After more than two decades in nursing, from neonatal care to emergency and day surgery, Registered Nurse Naomi Drew says she’s finally found her home in Refugee Health. ❤️

Now part of a small, dedicated nurse-led team, she’s helping newly arrived refugees navigate Australia’s health system, understand preventive care, and access services that support their wellbeing.

“Many of our clients have never experienced a healthcare system like this before,” Naomi said.

“We spend time helping them understand they can go to a GP to stay well, not just when they’re sick.”

Through health literacy sessions, interpreters, and community partnerships, the Refugee Health team is empowering families to build healthy habits for life. 🌏💙

Redland Hospital recently marked Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day with a special Wave of Light display in the Women and Children’s foyer. 💜

Candles, flowers and a lighting ceremony created a reflective space.

“The Wave of Light is a way to acknowledge the babies and families who are always in our hearts,” said Midwife Cassie.

“Creating a space like this lets people know they are not alone.”

The Wave of Light is observed around the world each year, with candles lit at 7pm local time to create a continuous wave of light across time zones. 🕯️

‘I gave birth to my second daughter at Logan Hospital and could not fault the service I received.’ 🥰

In preparing for Gianna’s birth, parents Eveline and Joseph made sure to tell the Logan maternity team that their first daughter, Gabrielle, had a lower-than-average birth weight.

‘I had an uncomplicated pregnancy with Gabrielle, and she was born naturally at 39 weeks plus 4 days. She was a tiny 2.1kg, but perfectly healthy,’ Eveline said.

Most babies born between 37 and 42 weeks of pregnancy weigh between 2.5kg and 4kg. While most small babies are healthy like Gabrielle, sometimes a low birth weight can be a sign of fetal growth restriction (FGR). This can cause complications and impact their health.

Having already had a small baby increases your chances of having another baby with FGR, so it’s important to monitor their growth throughout your pregnancy. 👩‍⚕️

‘The team took such great care of us with regular ultrasounds to closely monitor Gianna’s growth,’ Eveline said.

‘This time, I elected for a C-section, and the team fully supported my decision. We entered theatre at 12.30pm and by 12.45pm our beautiful girl arrived, weighing a healthy 3.55kg — a wonderful surprise after my first tiny baby.’

Gianna needed breathing support for about an hour after birth to help with low oxygen levels but was then well enough to join Eveline in the maternity ward.

‘We stayed two nights, went home on the third day, and the very next day a hospital midwife visited us at home to check on both baby and me,’ she explained.

‘I am so grateful for the care that I had received at Logan Hospital throughout my pregnancy, delivery and post birth.’

Congratulations, Eveline and Joseph! A gorgeous baby sister for Gabrielle. ❤️

Take a look at these beautiful new window decals in PA Hospital’s Cancer Ward! 🌻

The space has been transformed from clinical and therapeutic, to uplifting and calm, thanks to the work of the Cancer Services Standard Two Committee.

Valued Consumer Partners Dave and Grace made it their mission to help transform Ward 2E into a happier place.

“Seeing this change was just amazing!” Dave said. 💛

“I’ve been speaking to people who have been in since the installation and they love it."

Division of Cancer Services Nurse Manager, Sue Schoonbeek said the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive with families and patients.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to creating a therapeutic atmosphere that promotes emotional wellbeing, reduces stress and anxiety, and enhances recovery,” she said.

From safer surgeries to faster recoveries, every improvement in healthcare begins with research.

At this week’s Bayside Health Service Research Symposium, Metro South Health celebrated the research “superpowers” of frontline clinicians; staff who are using their real-world insights to turn evidence into better care for patients and families.

“Every improvement, from safer surgeries to better pain management, has stemmed from research,” said Professor Jed Duff, Keynote Speaker and Chair of Nursing at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

“Clinician-led research is our superpower; it happens where care happens.”

Thanks to The Emergency Medicine Foundation, which has funded more than $3 million in research across Metro South Health.

BHS Research Symposium sponsors included QSuper, part of Australian Retirement Trust , the University of Queensland; RemServ and Metro South Health Study, Education and Research Trust.

Shout-out to PA Hospital Senior Audiologist Jean Malig for being a superstar in all that she does! ⭐

Jean's journey at PAH began during her clinical placement where she thrived under the guidance of senior staff who she describes as a ‘wealth of knowledge’.

Now, after building a successful career, Jean says it’s a privilege to be that guiding presence for others as students take their first steps into the clinical world.

“Being on the other end of that journey and providing supervision is really special,” Jean said.

Jean was recently awarded the PAH Staff Award for October after being nominated for leading student supervision, as well as updating the Audiology guidelines.

“I just love what I do,” she said. Thank you for your ongoing kindness and compassion Jean! 💙
