Queensland Nurses and Midwives' Union

Queensland Nurses and Midwives' Union Authorised by S. Beaman, Secretary, Queensland Nurses and Midwives’ Union, West End, 4101. Membership of the QNMU also provides for full membership of the ANMF.

The Queensland Nurses and Midwives' Union (QNMU) is the peak industrial and professional organisation for nurses and midwives working in public and private health and aged care in Queensland. The QNMU seeks to promote and defend the industrial, professional, social, political and democratic interests of more than 70,000 members. Members include:

Registered nurses
Midwives
Enrolled nurses
Assistants in nursing (however titled)
Students
Anyone who undertakes nursing work

There is no other organisation in Queensland which provides comprehensive representation for nurses and midwives as both employees and professionals. The QNMU is a state-registered union and a branch of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF), which has branches in each state and territory, which means the Union is also active in promoting the interests of nurses and midwives on a national and international level. Members have the opportunity to be actively involved in the QNMU and decide our priorities through the Union’s democratic structure. Ultimately, it’s these priorities and policies which help influence and shape the practice of nursing and midwifery in Queensland. Nurses and midwives, through the QNMU, have a long and proud history of working together to achieve improvements to working conditions, to the profession and, through the broader union movement, to the lives of all Australians. Nurses and midwives continue to work together and pool their combined resources and knowledge to protect and further the common interests of all members. Find out more at www.qnmu.org.au

The QNMU encourages and supports online dialogue on our social media forums, and we encourage members and users to be familiar with our social media terms of use at www.qnmu.org.au/SocialMediaTOU

All policy development and change must be based on evidence-based facts. The QNMU stands in solidarity with National Nurses United in condemning the ideologically driven agenda of the Trump government and its attacks on nurses.

🎬 That's a wrap on our 2025 QNMU Member Summits and Meeting of Delegates!

During October and November, QNMU members joined us for eight all-day events across Queensland, designed to empower, uplift and rejuvenate nurses and midwives to create positive change in their lives, workplaces and beyond.

This year's summits featured inspiring presentations from mental health advocates Rachael Lynch OAM (Olympian, Hockeyroo, nurse) and Julie Goodwin (celebrity chef and published author). Sessions focused on tackling burnout, managing workplace pressures, and reigniting purpose through connection and self-care.

Thank you to everyone who joined us!

At our recent Brisbane Member Summit we proudly recognised Beth Mohle’s QNMU Life Membership and presented her with a special pin in her honour.

Beth retired in 2023 after 32 years with the QNMU, including 12 years as Secretary, a period marked with many outstanding achievements and outcomes for our nursing and midwifery professions.

From her early days as a nurse at the Royal Brisbane Hospital to her decades of advocacy, Beth has been a powerful voice for our professions. Under her leadership, Queensland achieved historic wins including legislated nurse-to-patient ratios in public health facilities and reforms that addressed the gender pay gap and gender disparity.

Beth’s vision, integrity, and advocacy have left a lasting legacy on nursing and midwifery in Queensland. We thank her for everything she has done for our members and our union. 👏💜

QNMU Officials were out and about last week visiting members at Mater sites across the Greater Brisbane region, and the message was clear 📣 Mater nurses and midwives demand pay parity with Queensland Health!

Not only have Mater management made a poor wages offer (5% over two years), they have also tabled 25 claims that would strip away important entitlements! 😡

Mater nurses and midwives deserve better 🙌💯

✨ Free webinar for QNMU members working in mental health ✨

We know therapeutic visual observations (TVOs) are part of everyday practice in mental health, and we also know that getting them right, and making sure they’re documented correctly, can be complex and high-risk.

Over the past 12 months, the QNMU has seen a noticeable increase in member representation requests related to TVOs including disciplinary, regulatory and coronial matters.

To support members working in mental health settings, we’re hosting a free webinar to help you better understand your roles and responsibilities around TVOs and what you can do if workplace factors are stopping you from safely meeting them.
