5 REAL Ways To Support Yourself After Therapy ||

It’s not all insights, powerful journaling revolutions and long mindful walks post therapy sessions.

Sometimes it’s raw messy phone notes, a phone call to a friend to unpack it all, followed by a well needed nap.

There is no real perfect way to cope and process with all that can get uncovered and brought up, but here are our real ways to possibly support yourself.

You’ll need to SAVE this one for your upcoming appointment!

What To Make When…Early Pregnancy Is Giving You The Food Ick ||

Next in our Dietitian Perinatal Recipe Series: Crunchy meal platter to get those nutrients and energy without the ick.

When expectation meets reality and colourful nutritious food just isn’t going to happen. Save this one to replace the plain toast you keep reaching for.

This plate might be beige but it offers a punch when it comes to folic acid and energy to combat first trimester nausea and fatigue, plus bioavailable folic acid from food along with a prenatal supplement to reduce risks of fetal development defects.

RECIPE ONE: What to Make When You… Want to Lay Strong Foundations For Conception.

Preconception is about more than timelines, it’s about giving your body the building blocks it needs.

This Turkish-style chicken parmy layers in protein, fibre and antioxidants, with a sesame seed crumb that brings in healthy fats to support egg health and nutrient stores.

A Gentle Way Through Body Image Distress ~ Urge Surfing ||

When body image anxiety spikes, it can bring a flood of urges like weighing yourself, body checking or doom scrolling through comparison traps online.

Whilst these urges are understandable, they don’t have to control your next move.

Urge surfing is one way to stay with the discomfort without reacting to it. Through grounding, sensory-based strategies and gentle redirection, you can ride the wave and return to what matters.

Remember: Every time you choose to sit with the discomfort instead of spiralling, you’re honouring the version of life you’re working toward.

Save this as a prompt for the next time you need to ride it out.

Your Therapist Has Changed Too ||

I remember my very first client in 2014 in a domestic violence service. I was so terrified I would not have the answers they needed, I wouldn’t get them out of their abusive relationship, I wouldn’t assess them correctly or I wouldn’t know the right model of treatment they required. I would loose myself fully in my head and the deep fear I wasn’t good enough, experienced enough, or academic enough.

But my incredible clients taught me from that early stage in my career what they needed from me. Woman who were fleeing horrifically violent relationships and they didn’t need my assessment of their issues, they needed my presence. To be held and seen for the first time in many of their lives. They taught me to start asking very different questions as their therapist.

Was I present enough? What will make them feel safe with me? How can I show up with no judgement? How can this relationship be the safe base they are requiring to make any changes they may need, not what I think they need?

And as I was privileged enough to sit with these woman and hear their stories, I saw myself change and shape into the therapist I am today. And it wouldn’t be without them.

This Carl Rogers quote sums it up perfectly. How lucky we are to change and grow as your therapist too.

Your Needs Don’t Need An Apology ||

We’re often quick to say “I’m sorry” for resting, for needing support, for expressing emotion, for putting in a limit. Valid human needs we have no business saying sorry for.

Apologising for your needs makes the need appear like a burden or inconvenience, can make you appear (& feel!) less confident and can set you up for an unhealthy dynamic with the person you are expressing the need to.

So let’s change that!

SAVE this post if you’re a chronic over-apologiser (🙋🏼‍♀️) and want to shift your language to one of assertive self-respect.

Meghan Gray of GrayMind Psychology

GrayMind Psychology is a boutique psychology practice that works with couples, individuals and adolescents to enrich their lives. We are located in Paddington, an inner city suburb of Brisbane, and use the most modern psychology approaches that can create sustained change for you.

From the wait-room to your time in each of our therapy rooms, we have consciously created a uniquely tailored, enriched and nurturing therapy environment. Our detailed space is created to support your sense of comfort, safety, and containment from the moment you step in.

Many people attend therapy with the goal of being happy, finding their attempts to do so on their own have left them feeling stuck. We all struggle with unhelpful thoughts, difficult emotions or unpleasant memories, and often our attempts to get rid of these internal experiences can leave us feeling worse. Here at GrayMind Psychology, we have expert psychologists who can help you change your relationship with your thoughts and feelings.

Helping you to work through those ‘inner tangles’, we are committed to using only evidenced-based techniques to give you actionable steps to create a fulfilling and meaningful life.
