For QLD parents

BREAKING: Queensland school students will learn at home for the first five weeks of Term 2, with schools only open for the children of essential workers.

The move to the home-based learning model starts on Monday, 20 April and will be in place until at least Friday, 22 May.

All students who can learn from home are to stay at home.

School staff, unless they are vulnerable due to medical conditions, will continue to teach from the classroom to ensure continuity of learning for students.

Children of essential workers and vulnerable children can continue to attend school.

This is another very difficult decision, but it is the right one for Queensland while we continue to slow the spread of COVID-19.

I am always amazed at the prescription rate of benzodiazapines... particularly for people with disabilities. So many of the people I work with lack effective communication skills and have to deal with situations that can be quite stressful - when they find this difficult the go-to is often medication. It would be great if care teams would consider other solutions such as communication supports, changing the environment and sourcing great carers before writing out a script.

Benzodiazepines were involved in more drug-induced deaths in 2016 than he**in and methadone combined, but you would be hard-pressed to find any stories warning of their dangers on the front pages.
