You Can’t Pour From an Empty Cup — but how and when do you fill it?

We hear it all the time in healthcare.

“You can’t pour from an empty cup.”

But the reality for many Nurses, healthcare workers and carers is that the system often expects us to keep pouring
even when the cup is already empty.

Long shifts.
Emotional load.
Staff shortages.
The invisible weight of caring for people on their worst days.

And then outside of work, many of us are also parents, carers, partners, community members and the ones holding everything together at home.

At The Scrub Hub, we believe something needs to change.

Looking after the people who care for everyone else is not a luxury, it’s essential.

When healthcare workers are supported to protect their wellbeing, maintain their health and feel connected to their purpose, the entire healthcare system becomes stronger.

This week was a reminder that our health and wellbeing cannot sit at the bottom of the priority list forever.

Small steps matter.
Conversations matter.
Community matters.

If you’re a Nurse or healthcare worker feeling stretched thin right now, please know this: you are not alone but you deserve support, space and systems that help you thrive in your life alongside your profession, not just survive.

The Scrub Hub exists to be part of that change.

Uni just went back. New grads just started. And somewhere right now a student is wondering if they cut out for this.

They do. I wrote them a letter. Go share it with them đŸ«¶

Not every year is for glowing up.
Some years are for staying steady.
Some are for rebuilding.
Some are for surviving without losing yourself.

If 2026 ends with you calmer, healthier, or more supported than last year, that is progress.
Full stop.

What are you choosing this year, growth, rebuild, or steady?

Wanting something different doesn’t mean you hate Nursing.
It means you’re paying attention.

You can be curious without committing.
You can explore quietly.
Nothing needs to happen today.

If you’re in that “thinking” season, you’re in good company.

If you’re back at work and already tired, you’re not ungrateful.
You’re not in the wrong career.
You’re probably just running on empty for longer than you realised.

You don’t have to fix your whole life this week.
Just notice.
Name it.
Be honest with yourself.

What’s draining you most right now, workload, lack of support, roster, or life outside work?

Dearest Gentle Reader,

It has come to this author’s attention that an old acquaintance, one long thought to belong to a bygone era, has once again begun making the rounds of the Ton.

Yes, syphilis has returned to polite society, and unlike a fleeting scandal, it does not resolve itself through silence or avoidance. While whispers may travel faster than facts, let us be perfectly clear:
syphilis is preventable, detectable, and treatable; particularly when identified early.

In its first act, one may notice a small, painless sore at the site of infection, easily dismissed, tragically overlooked.

In the second, the plot thickens:
a rash, fever, swollen glands, sore throat, patchy hair loss, or lesions that come and go like a most notorious Rake.

Those who find themselves concerned (whether through symptoms, exposure, or simple prudence) are strongly encouraged to act with the utmost discretion and responsibility.

đŸ©ș What One Ought to Do (According to the Rules of Good Health & Good Sense)

👉 Seek testing promptly through appropriate clinical services
👉 Commence treatment without delay if required
👉 Engage in contact tracing
👉 Avoid further exposure until cleared. Even the most charming company is not worth prolonged consequences

🎭 A Final Word, dear readr, true respectability lies not in secrecy, but in responsibility. Alas, prevention, unlike a Rake’s promises, is far more reliable. Use protection - always.

Yours in fashionable prevention,
Society’s Health Correspondent

If you’ve had the thought, “I can’t do another year like last year,” you’re not dramatic.
You’re aware.

That thought doesn’t mean quit tomorrow.
It usually means something needs adjusting.

Let’s make it small and doable.
One change.
One step.
One bit of support.

Drop a “slight change” you’re considering, even if it’s tiny.

The new year comes with this weird pressure to reinvent yourself like you’re a phone update.

You don’t need a “new you” to move forward. You need a kinder pace.

If you’re tired, you’re allowed to be tired.
If you’re unsure, you’re allowed to be unsure.
If you’re just existing right now, that still counts.

Tell me one tiny thing you’re doing to be gentler this year. We’ll steal ideas off each other, respectfully.

Quick check in for the Scrub Hub crew.
If you’ve ever supported a patient or loved one through resp issues, you know how much reassurance matters!

On 26 Feb, Giving Day donations are doubled. If you’re planning to donate, even a small one, set a reminder now so you catch the matched window.

Drop a đŸ©· if you’re in.
No pressure, just community.
