Behind every number is a carer who reached out, showed up or kept going. The Arafmi Annual Report 2024–25 reflects a year of deep connection, practical support and sustained care for carers across Queensland. From one to one phone support and respite stays to workshops, retreats and peer led groups, these figures represent time given, stories shared and trust placed in us by carers and communities.

We are grateful to every carer and volunteer who attended a group, made a call, joined a workshop or took a moment of rest. Your experiences guide our work and strengthen our advocacy for better systems and real change.

Thank you to our staff, volunteers and partners who continue to stand alongside carers with consistency, compassion and respect.

You can read the full Annual Report and explore the impact in more detail via our website.

We deeply appreciate everyone who shared their experiences for the review and want to acknowledge your contributions. We will be reviewing the report and its recommendations. In the meantime, please remember to take care of yourself and seek support if needed.

Press play and pause the day 🎶☕ This time of year can feel especially full for mental health carers, with busy schedules and extra family, financial or emotional pressures. When you can, take a moment for yourself, turn off the lights, and dance like no one is watching to some feel-good tunes.

We asked our staff to share the songs they turn to when they need a lift. We hope listening to a few brings joyful energy into your day. 🌿🎧

Our Story

In 1976, a young social worker on his final placement at the Stones Corner Community Mental Health Service, (then the only such service in Queensland) recognised a need among the families of his clients for a ‘relatives’ discussion group’. Such a group would enable families to meet and share their experiences as carers of family members with a serious mental illness. The group initially commenced with five people who discovered, many for the first time, that they were not alone. They began the fragile process of hearing each other’s stories and working through the pain together, with both tears and laughter.

From these beginnings Arafmi built a model which mutually supports people in one of the most primary roles of humanity – caring for people more vulnerable than ourselves and the ones we love. Arafmi built a model of service which both created and shared knowledge about how to understand who we are, the roles we fulfil and how to take action in the world. From these humble beginnings, Arafmi took action in the world!
