A few years ago I realised something the hard wayโ€ฆ
You canโ€™t do it all.

I was trying to juggle work, training, family, and everything in between โ€” and it caught up with me in a pretty big way.

That experience forced me to step back and get really clear on my priorities.

Because when you donโ€™t consciously choose what matters mostโ€ฆ
๐Ÿ‘‰ stress chooses for you
๐Ÿ‘‰ overwhelm builds
๐Ÿ‘‰ and your health starts to slide

Most people donโ€™t need to try harder.
They need to get clearer.

If youโ€™re feeling stuck or overwhelmed right now, this might help:

Iโ€™ve been getting a bit of back pain after running latelyโ€ฆ
And initially, I thought my back was the issue.

But when I looked deeper, it wasnโ€™t.
It was my feet, calves, and hips not doing their job โ€” which meant the load had to go somewhereโ€ฆ and my back paid the price.

This is something we see all the time in clinic.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Pain shows up in one place
๐Ÿ‘‰ But the problem often starts somewhere else

Short-term fixes like stretching or rolling might help temporarilyโ€ฆ
But long-term progress comes from improving how your body actually handles load.

Something that came up in clinic today:
You donโ€™t actually get better from the workout itself.

You get better from how your body responds to it afterwards.
Recovery is where the magic happens.

Sleep, nervous system regulation, and proper rest allow your body to adapt.
So if youโ€™re constantly pushing harder without recoveringโ€ฆ
you might be working against yourself.

A quick thought from clinic todayโ€ฆ

Your feet might be one of the most overlooked parts of your body.
Each foot has over 200,000 nerve receptors, making it one of the most important areas for balance and movement.

During my time in nursing, I saw firsthand how devastating falls can be later in life.
And often, they start with poor awareness and lack of strength through the feet.

The good news?
Itโ€™s trainable.

A different way to think about ice bathsโ€ฆ
Most people use them for recovery.

I use them as a daily check-in with my nervous system.
Same water temperature every day.

But how it feels tells me whether Iโ€™m stressed or recovered.
And that helps guide how hard I train or work that day.
Understanding your body like this is a game changer.

One of the biggest shifts you can make in your health isnโ€™t doing moreโ€ฆ
Itโ€™s learning how to adjust.

Today I was meant to do intervals, but Iโ€™ve been run down and not sleeping well.
So instead, I shortened the session and dropped the intensity.
That one decision might not look like muchโ€ฆ
But itโ€™s the difference between building momentum and burning out.

At The Functional Movement Club, we donโ€™t just give you a plan.
We teach you how to understand your body so you can make the right call when it matters.

Rest is not always best.
When your back flares up, resting can help settle things down in the short term.

But if rest is the only strategy, it can actually keep you stuck.
Because your body never rebuilds the

So when you try to return to normal activityโ€ฆ the pain comes straight back.

Not because movement is bad.

But because your body hasnโ€™t rebuilt the ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ด๐˜๐—ต ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—บ๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐˜†๐—ฒ๐˜.

The long-term solution is learning how to rebuild:
โ€ข movement skill
โ€ข strength
โ€ข and tolerance to load

If you want to understand what might actually be driving your pain, you can take our ๐—›๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜๐—ต ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜‚๐˜‚๐—บ ๐—ค๐˜‚๐—ถ๐˜‡ here:

Have you ever noticed your pain improve with restโ€ฆ only to come straight back when you start moving again?

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t a damn piece of popcorn.โ€

A young mum came into the clinic with a disc bulge and nerve pain down her leg. She thought it happened because she bent down to pick up a piece of popcorn.

But when we unpacked it, the picture changed.

She hadnโ€™t been sleeping well. Sheโ€™d done a heavy gym session a few days earlier. Her back had already been feeling tight.

So it wasnโ€™t the popcorn. It was the ๐—ฏ๐˜‚๐—ถ๐—น๐—ฑ-๐˜‚๐—ฝ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ ๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐˜๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฒ.

Most injuries donโ€™t come from one dramatic moment. They come from the small things stacking up in the background โ€” until something simple becomes the tipping point.

Does your back pain magically disappear when you go on holidays?
I hear this all the time.

People feel great while theyโ€™re awayโ€ฆ
then the moment they get back to normal life, the pain returns.

Itโ€™s not random.
And itโ€™s not just your back.

When youโ€™re on holidays:
You sit less.
You move more.
Your stress levels drop.
And when stress drops, your

So the pain doesnโ€™t always disappear โ€” it just falls below the level where you notice it.

Then you come home, stress builds again, and the pain returns.

So the goal isnโ€™t more holidays.
Itโ€™s learning how to ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—บ๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—น๐˜†.

When I was under-fueled on carbs, it showed up everywhere โ€” waking up at 2โ€“3AM, anxiety creeping in, HRV dropping, and muscle soreness that wouldnโ€™t go away.

Thatโ€™s why we created a free guide with our top 3 exercises for back pain designed to complement our Pain-Free Movement Program and help you train without being held back by pain.

After tracking my nutrition, I realized I was consuming less than half, sometimes only a quarter of the carbohydrates my body actually needed to recover and perform well.

For reference, research shows that moderate training (5โ€“7 hrs/week) requires 5โ€“7g of carbs per kg body weight, while heavy training or double days need 7โ€“10g/kg.

At 87 kg training 6โ€“10 hrs weekly, I was severely under-fueled.

If youโ€™re training hard but still feeling fatigued or stuck, it might be time to reassess your fueling strategy.
