Do you know why some foods have Precautionary Allergen Labelling (PAL) statements? 🤔🥫

Food manufacturers use PAL (‘may contain’) statements to tell you about the risk of cross contamination of food allergens from one product to another. This can happen even if they have cleaned or flushed the equipment in between the different products. Cleaning can’t always remove all of the product and some food allergens can be left behind.

It was great to be in Canberra again last week to meet and discuss the importance of allergic disease.

The National Allergy Council (the partnership between Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia and Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy) and the National Allergy Centre of Excellence spent the day advocating for improved allergy care in Canberra yesterday.

After attending The Pharmacy Guild of Australia breakfast where the Hon Rebecca White ((Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care, Indigenous Health and Women) spoke to improved health outcomes for Australians, we met with the Hon Jason Clare's (Minister for Education) office and then with the Hon Rebecca White’s chief of staff and finally, Food Standards Australia New Zealand. It was a great day of advocacy and strategy discussion with the ultimate goal of improving the health and wellbeing of people with allergic disease.

Representatives include Tenaya Jamieson, Dr Sandra Vale, Dr Melanie Wong, Professor Kirsten Perrett and Maria Said AM.

Do you work in schools? Is your school allergy aware? 🎒💛

An allergy aware approach is recommended in the National Allergy Council’s Best practice guidelines for anaphylaxis prevention and management in schools. An allergy aware approach involves sharing information with everyone so they know what they can do to help keep children with allergies safe.

This week we are presenting and exhibiting at the 35th Annual ASCIA conference in Brisbane.

Today, we had the opportunity to update ASCIA conference delegates about National Allergy Council program outcomes. Dr Michael O’Sullivan, ASCIA president, presented a summary of the Deloitte Costly Reactions: The economic and social cost of allergic disease in Australia report. We also shared important updates about our shared care, food allergy prevention, schools and children’s education and care, and antibiotic allergy programs. Our program co-leads representing Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy and Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia joined the Q&A panel discussion.
