Plagiocephaly is a deformity of the skull that results in an asymmetrical head shape or a ‘flat spot’ on a baby’s head.
A typical physiotherapy assessment includes looking at birth history, 24-hour positioning, head shape, muscle tightness and strength, and physical development.
Treatment usually includes;
- Troubleshooting with infant positioning
- Hands-on exercises in clinic
- A home program including gentle stretching and strengthening exercises
In more difficult cases of plagiocephaly, we may recommend helmet therapy through an orthotist to assist with improving head shape.
With plagiocephaly, early intervention is key! Ideally, babies will be assessed < 3 months of age, as once babies begin rolling it becomes more challenging (though still possible!) to treat.
