Three steps to early skin cancer detection

The Sunshine Coast has some of the highest rates of melanoma and skin cancer in the world.

These days, more of us take steps to protect ourselves and reduce that risk.

This is great, but when skin cancer happens, how can we find it early before it causes harm?

Step 1: Self-Check

Check your own skin every 2 months. Look for anything Sore, Changing, Abnormal, or New that doesn't go away after 4-6 weeks.

Remember to use a mirror or a loved one for hard to see places.

Fast growing skin cancers are the easiest to spot, if you're looking.

Step 2: Skin Check

Get a thorough skin check with an experienced skin cancer doctor.

Dermatoscopes (skin scopes) used during a skin check can see patterns in the skin not visible to the naked eye. They can give early clues to skin cancer.

You can find doctors with specific training and experience in skin checks at SunLife Skin Cancer Care Centre.

Step 3: Imaging

Identifying melanoma that changes gradually is often not easy.

3D Total Body Photography (TBP) provides detailed imaging and comparison to help identify changing moles earlier.

Cancer Council Guidelines say photography should be considered by people at higher risk of melanoma (such as many moles, complex moles, previous melanoma, or close family history).

In its modern care centre, SunLife has one of only five 3D TBP machines available for private bookings in Australia.

The dedicated doctors at SunLife provide all aspects of care - from thorough skin checks, to skin cancer treatment, and advanced skin cancer imaging, all at the same location.

You can book a skin check at SunLife online today, or call for 3D Total Body Photography.

NO REFERRAL NEEDED.

Tips for summer sunscreen protection

Recent study findings that highlighted some poor sunscreen testing methods have raised concern about the use of sunscreen.

It’s very important to understand that these findings were limited and that the brands affected have been withdrawn.

Sunscreen is still highly effective!

Here’s my list of top sunscreen tips:

Applying sunscreen:

Apply a teaspoon (5ml) to each exposed area: face and neck, each limb, front of body, and back. Reapply every two hours. Remember, sun protective clothing doesn’t wear off and reduces the requirements for sunscreen.

Storing sunscreen:
Keep sunscreen below 30'C and use before the expiry date. Sunscreen in a hot car can break down and stop working in less than a day.

Choosing sunscreen:
Pick a sunscreen rated SPF30 or SPF50. Choose one you like, that is compatible with your skin, and you will use regularly.

As always, the best option is to avoid sun exposure where possible.

Seek shade and plan activities at low UV hours where possible.

The best skin cancer care is a team effort

Skin cancer affects more than 75% of Australians by the time they are 75 years old.

That proportion is higher in people with fair or olive skin types.

Many people develop skin cancers regularly, meaning ongoing surveillance and care. They may also have difficulty with flaky or uncomfortable sun damaged skin.

With the Sunshine Coast having amongst the highest skin cancer rates in the country (and the world!), identifying and managing skin cancer is important and can be challenging.

To help combat this problem, SunLife Skin Cancer Care Centre in Wises Road, Buderim/Maroochydore has been building a team of trained and experienced skin cancer doctors supported by caring and efficient nursing and reception staff.

All of the doctors are accredited with the Skin Cancer College of Australasia, or are finalising this in the coming month, and they all have relevant Masters or Diploma degrees.

Dr Nadia Messerschmidt enjoys being efficient and detailed in her approach to skin cancer care. She always looks for the most elegant approach to her surgical work and has been a hit with her patients since joining the practice.

Dr Daud Yunus always puts his patients first, communicating clearly and making sure they are welcome and happy in his care. His patients appreciate the experience he shares with them and his dedication to providing quality care.

Dr Marelise Pretorius is kind, practical, and focused in her care. Her patients like her no-fuss approach, wealth of experience, and open manner.

You can book appointments at SunLife now. No referral needed.

Getting a skin cancer is common here on the Sunshine Coast.

For many people, getting another one is a regular worry, or even a regular occurrence.

This creates a variety of issues for patients and their close family.

These can incude knowing how to best find skin cancers, how to treat them, being confident they are getting appropriate care, and managing the time needed for this.

SunLife is a skin cancer care centre that understands this well.

From the start, the locally owned and managed clinic has provided a full range of up-to-date services in one central location, and staff continue to develop and improve these services.

Providing a range of services including thorough skin checks, advanced digital imaging, non-surgical treatment, routine and complex surgical treatment, the doctors at SunLife can assess and treat almost all skin cancers onsite without need for referral.

In supporting its patients, SunLife Skin Cancer Care Centre has a caring and dedicated team of nurses and reception staff who are there every step of the way.

Hereee come the Men in Sunnies. 🎶 😎

All creatures on earth (of human form) should protect their eyes from sun damage by wearing sunglasses when heading outdoors.

Close-fitted, wrap-around sunnies are a great way to protect your eyes from damage caused by exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Over time, exposure to the sun's rays can cause:
👁️ skin cancer around the eyes, eyelids or on the eye
👁️ cataracts (a clouding of the eyes natural lens which can cause vision loss)
👁️ cloudiness of the cornea (the top protective layer of the eye).

Sun safe guys (and girls) wear sunnies, remember that. ☝️

How to stay skin safe this summer

The sun protection season is in full swing again. Many of people have had sunburn before and do our best to avoid it. But is stopping burns enough? How do we keep safe from melanoma and skin cancer?

First, think about sun damage.

Sunburn is acutely damaging to the skin. Most people understand this and take measures to avoid it.

Long-term sun exposure isn’t immediately visible. It adds up over time and is often forgotten. It is a real issue in Queensland with year-round sunshine and even more so in summer.

Once the problem is understood, think about how to prevent skin cancer or detect it early if it happens. Here are some top tips:

1. Have good sun protection habits whenever the UV is over 3. Follow the Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, Slide advice - even for shorter exposures.

2. Check your skin every 2-3 months for anything Sore, Changing, Adnormal, or New and not going away in 5-6 weeks. Get it checked.

3. Get a regular skin check if you: are over 40 years old with fair or olive skin, have many moles, previous skin cancer, a close family history of skin cancer or high sun exposure history (especially with severe or many sunburns).

SunLife Skin Cancer Care Centre is dedicated to the prevention, early detection, and treatment of melanoma and skin cancer.

The doctors practising at SunLife have advanced skin cancer training and provide all aspects of care including detailed skin checks, surgical treatment, non-surgical treatment, and advanced 3D digital imaging.

Book a skin check at SunLife online or call for 3D Total Body Photography. No referral is needed.
