As I’ve been posting recently about my upcoming September yoga retreat, I thought I should introduce myself, for those of you who only know me as ‘Unity Yoga’.
My name is Christine du Fresne, and I’ve been practising hatha yoga for about 40 years and teaching for over 35 years. And I’ve been studying yoga philosophy with my teacher, Carlos Pomeda for about 16 years.
So, an experienced teacher, and an ‘older’ teacher now at 78. But being ‘older’ doesn’t diminish teaching and practicing; actually I think it enhances both. I’m much more relaxed and open than I was 40 years ago, and acceptance has become more of a way of life than a challenging practice. I still do handstands.
So who did I train with? What’s my ‘style’?
I began in the Iyengar tradition and completed a Level 1 training with a senior Iyengar teacher in Sydney, although I didn’t move on to certification. Instead, I taught around various studios for some years before taking off to travel the world for two years, teaching a bit here and there as I went.
When I returned I trained with another teacher who had just been introduced to the Anusara method of yoga practice - a practice founded in both alignment-based asana and non-dual philosophy. It struck the right note with me, and I completed a 4-year apprenticeship with him, becoming a certified Anusara teacher in 2009.
I had two studios in Sydney, then moved up to Bulahdelah in 2014 to a house my daughter and I built. I still live here in this beautiful straw bale house, teaching a Friday morning class in Bulahdelah, hosting Carlos for study groups and running a retreat each year.
And that’s enough.
I love the retreats.
This year it’s closer to home, close to Sydney and close to an airport for those from a disance.
So come and join us in Port Stephens; practice with us, relax with us and enjoy the beaches on our free afternoon.
You’ll meet some wonderful people.
You can see all the retreat details on my Events page via the link in my bio.
