Such a wonderful evening at the UQ School of Psychology Clinical Awards Evening for 2025, chaired by the amazing Director of the Clinical Program, my friend and colleague Associate Professor James Kirby. It was great to hear from the guest speaker Glynn Chambers, about his professional journey and how this has been impacted upon or influenced by his personal experience of serious illness. I could personally resonate with Glynn’s presentation, it really reinforced the rollercoaster journey that is acceptance, self-compassion, and healing.

Live music at the beginning and end of the evening as graciously provided by Hu Gh Walker and Chilli was greatly appreciated.

So very proud of the award recipients, particularly Brenton Michael Sando (my previous externship supervisee, current registrar supervisee and colleague at my private practice) who won the Gabbie Simionato Award, Tim Scott my internship supervisee from last semester who won the Bernie Award, and my friend and colleague Graham du Plessis who so deservedly won the Paul Conrad Award for Excellence in Supervision. Welcome to the club my friend and congratulations to all the deserving award recipients once more.

Always wonderful to catch up with colleagues and friends at UQ, and to see past illustrious professors from my undergraduate years including Emeritus Professor Tian Oei and Professor Nancy Pachana.

For those who might not know it, I really love UQ and our wonderful School of Psychology.

There is no doubt that aquariums can look beautiful, but there is also research evidence demonstrating the relaxing and stress reducing effects they have on clients, when placed in waiting rooms in psychology and other medical/health practices.

Subsequently, my Master of Clinical Psychology student on placement, decided to research, develop a plan, and assist me in setting up the aquarium, as part of her required placement project.

It was a real team effort, which couldn’t have been completed this evening if it wasn’t for the added assistance of my amazing son Enrico. We started at about 1:45 pm this afternoon and were finished by 8pm. The final product looks just beautiful, and of course it had to have an ancient Roman theme. Now all we need to do is wait at least 2 weeks for the healthy bacteria to build up and amonia levels to reduce, before adding any fish

Well done to our Giuls and our team!! I’m so proud of you, and the aquarium already looks beautiful. 🤗❤️ 🐟

There is no doubt that the concerning immigration protest events on Sunday 31st of August, whether driven by misinformation or disinformation, fear that immigrants will take our resources, or actual racism/hatred; that many will subsequently be experiencing great levels of distress, fear, or a perception that they must once again justify themselves (even if they have contributed greatly to our Australian society).

For those experiencing such distress and suffering, I want you to know that you are not alone and that many others see your plight and support you.

In fact, while organisers of these protests are touting them as a great success and suggesting the need for social movement because of them, the reality is, that the numbers attending these rallies were not as great as per other recent protests (e.g., those supporting the Palestinian people in Gaza). Counter rallies were also held on the same day, and in some instances with an equivalent number of attendees. This would suggest that not all Australians support these ideals and resist them, in order to maintain our beautiful multiculturalism.

Available data regarding the experience of racism is sobering (although not included here), so of course we must remain vigilant and work towards improved mutual understanding and respect, to prevent such movements taking entire hold of our society.

Furthermore, as a Clinical Psychologist, but more importantly as a human being, I desire to acknowledge our shared humanity, which would dictate a need for demonstrated compassion towards all who are sufferring (engaging with the suffering and taking helpful action). It is our duty to assist the vulnerable in our society, and I take this duty seriously, nor do I desire to absolve myself of this responsibility. Personally, all in need (regardless of ideology) will always be welcome at CCC Psychology, and no racism or prejudice will be accepted.

If recent events have caused you distress and you require assistance, please avail yourselves of the various helplines available:

I remain hopeful that humanity will not act in angst or competition, but work as a true community to educate and resolve our societal woes. Wishing everyone a calm and pleasant afternoon.

Great to attend Mark Ryan’s small business coffee catch-up this morning. Always wonderful to see the support Mark offers local businesses, to hear from and network with other providers/businesses, and to be able to inform community partners that CCC Psychology is now accepting new referrals, supporting those in our community experiencing mental health problems. Thank you Mark Ryan and community partners in Moreton City.
