🌍🀱 Celebrating World Breastfeeding Week! 🀱🌍

Hey friends! It's World Breastfeeding Week, and as an IBCLC, I couldn't be more thrilled to join the global conversation about the highs and lows of breast/chest feeding! This year's theme has me super passionate, as it puts a spotlight on transforming policies and legalities to enhance support for new parents and make IBCLCs more accessible and affordable. πŸ’ͺπŸ’™

We all know that breast/chest feeding your baby is a personal choice but I hear so often that the impacts of societal expectations and limitations of support dramatically impact that choice. Which sucks!!!

Everyone in power has the responsibility to create an environment that empowers parents to embark on their feeding journey feeling supported. Education is key for everyone when it comes to how you feed your baby! Information is power!

Having the time to learn the skill of feeding is also crucial. We need to ensure that new parents have sufficient time off work to establish and enjoy their breast/chest feeding routine. We do this by implementing supportive leave policies that prioritize families and parent/baby connection. I've heard from so many parents "I'd like to breast/chest feed but what's the point if I'm only home for 3 months".

But education and time alone are not enough; support is the glue that holds it all together. From the moment a parent considers breast/chest feeding to the challenges they face along the journey, having easy and affordable access to IBCLCs is crucial. When we make these services more affordable and accessible, we pave the way for parents to receive the guidance, expertise, and encouragement they need to navigate the breast/chest feeding experience with confidence. πŸ₯πŸ’™

So join me in celebrating World Breastfeeding Week, where we advocate for policies that champion parental leave, prioritize access to lactation support, and cherish the essential foundations of education, time, and support on every breast/chest feeding journey. Together, we can create a world where every parent has the tools they need to nourish and nurture their little ones. 🌎🀱πŸ’ͺ

Oh man not a good picture of me hey! I went from a little bit uncomfortable to temps of 40 and feeling like I'd been hit by a truck in 24hrs. Mastitis is a rough journey!! But! Since 2021 the management of Mastitis has changed! Thanks to the extensive research by the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine the way we manage mastitis has shifted.

This change will have significant positive impact of the lives of breast/chest feeding parents worldwide!

If you need support with feeding your baby, mastitis or anything else don't hesitate to reach out to your friendly neighbourhood IBCLC. Check out the LCANZ website to find a IBCLC in your area.

Hey wonderful humans, I'm sure I'm not alone when I say our family is in the thick of winter sickness (back to back! It's so rough!)

So I'm going to throw a reminder out there that (even though feeding when everyone is unwell feels so challenging) human milk provides an impressive array of immune factors that help protect your little one from infections and illnesses.

Human milk contains antibodies, white blood cells, immune cells, lactoferrin, lysozymes, oligosaccharides, and cytokines. These immune factors are working tirelessly in every dose of milk to fight off harmful bacteria and viruses, reduce inflammation, and promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria.

By breast/chest feeding your baby, you're providing them with a powerful defense system that gives them the best chance to fight off illnesses and stay healthy.

I think that's just so very cool.

It's NAIDOC week!

During NAIDOC week we celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

This week you can go to an amazing array of events to learn and celebrate across the country! I absolutely encourage you to jump on the NAIDOC website and check out their local events tab to see what's happening in your area.

As a health professional this week I would be absolutely remiss if I didn't acknowledge the absolute inequality in health care that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people face in all stages of life. Particularly pertinent for my work is the inequality, injustice, and racism faced by parents during their antenatal, birth, and postnatal care.

In my role as a Nurse, Midwife and IBCLC I am determined to practice in a way that is welcoming and safe for all people. However I know, despite my best efforts my innate privilege might impact my unconscious biases and I might get it wrong. I want to get it right, please know I am always open to feedback.

Have a wonderful NAIDOC week.

Hi everyone! Its your friendly local IBCLC here to talk about the benefits of having a written breast/ chest feeding plan leading up to birth.

Having a feeding plan can help you to:

Set realistic expectations for yourself and your baby

Identify potential challenges and develop strategies for overcoming them

Communicate your wishes to your healthcare provider and other support people

Feel more confident and prepared for breast/chest feeding

If you're planning to breast/chest feed, I encourage you to take some time to create a written plan. Here are a few things to consider when writing your plan:

Your goals for feeding your baby

Your lifestyle and work schedule

Any challenges you or your baby may face

The resources you have available to you

Once you have a written plan, you can share it with your healthcare provider, IBCLC, and other support people. This will help them to understand your wishes and provide you with the best possible support.

Don't hesitate to reach out if you need support with anything breast/chestfeeding. You can find IBCLCs like me via the LCANZ website or through the ABA :)

Did you know that the start of your milk production is influenced by many factors? Things like how your birth went, the blood loss you experienced, how much/how well baby is feeding, and hormonal conditions are just a few things that can influence the arrival of your milk 🀱

The "text book" expectation is you will make colostrum from (or before) birth and full milk comes in around 2-5 days after birth, but it can vary from person to person. Knowing what can impact that timeline and how you can support the process can be really empowering and anxiety reducing.

If you are worried about your milk supply or have any questions about breast/chest feeding, don’t hesitate to reach out to an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) like me! We are here to support you and your baby on your breastfeeding journey. πŸ’• Find a IBCLC local to you via the LCANZ website or through the ABA.
