If a person has a communication impairment, their behaviour is often telling us something their communication system cannot.
Behaviour = Communication.
When Positive Behaviour Support Plans (PBSPs) are developed without a communication lens, we risk managing behaviour rather than understanding it. If a person cannot reliably express needs, process demands, or repair communication breakdowns, escalation becomes predictable - not defiant.
Speech Pathology is not simply adjacent to behaviour support. It is foundational to understanding the communication drivers behind behaviour and supporting meaningful, sustainable change.
Given this, how can a Comprehensive Positive Behaviour Support Plan (PBSP) be written without consulting a Speech Pathologist?
