Lung cancer remains one of Australia’s most significant health challenges

Key facts:
✅Over 15,000 Australians will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year.
✅It is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Australia.
✅Around 1 in 3 cases are diagnosed at a later stage, when treatment options are more limited.
✅The 5-year survival rate is 27%, highlighting the importance of early detection.
✅From July 2025, Australians aged 50–70 with a history of smoking can access free low-dose CT screening through the National Lung Cancer Screening Program.

Be aware of:
Persistent cough, breathlessness, chest pain, fatigue, or unexplained weight loss.

What you can do:

Speak to your GP
Know the signs
Don’t wait

This weekend I was asked to co-facilitate a training session for GPs on caring for people with eating disorders alongside Dr Sue Martin from WA.

The room was packed and questions were plentiful. It’s so encouraging to see the increasing interest in and awareness of how to care for these patients.

Let’s talk breast cancer risk 💬
1 in 7 women and 1 in 550 men are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. While some factors like age and s*x can't be changed, others can be.

Here are a few lifestyle choices that may help lower your risk:
🚫 Limit alcohol
🏃‍♀️ Stay active
🥗 Maintain a healthy weight
🚭 Avoid smoking
🥩 Cut back on processed meats

Remember: having risk factors doesn’t mean you’ll get breast cancer, and not having them doesn’t guarantee you won’t. If you're concerned, chat with your GP 💙

Let’s meet Dr Emily!
Dr Emily has just joined The Hub Family Medical Centre, bringing her wealth of experience from the UK, including graduating with distinction from University College London, advanced diplomas in reproductive and s*xual health, and a certificate in menopause management. She’s worked across multiple hospital specialties, led research presentations across Europe, and trained countless medical students and doctors.

Now, Dr Emily has brought all that expertise to Brisbane on a new adventure with her family. She loves supporting patients of all ages, from women’s health and children’s health to mental health and chronic conditions.
When she’s not at the clinic, Dr Emily is chasing her two young boys and grabbing a much-needed coffee and pastry. Know a good coffee spot? Make sure she knows!
