Keeping your pet’s nails short is important for their comfort and health. Long nails can change the way pets walk, cause pain in their paws and joints, and may even split, break, or grow into the paw pad.

Many pets are happy to visit our nurses for a quick nail clip appointment (usually with plenty of treats and pats as payment 💰).

But for some pets, nail trims are 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹, and that’s okay! We can prescribe 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 to help reduce anxiety and make the experience safer and more comfortable for everyone involved.

If oral medications aren’t effective, we may recommend a 𝘃𝗲𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 so we can trim the nails safely while your pet is relaxed and stress-free.

When it comes to nail clips, Bruiser firmly believes 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙤𝙙.
Oral medications aren’t an option for him, so he visits us for a 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗺, complete with his favourite 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗲 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝘅𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗺 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁 (apparently this is also how he sleeps most nights).

Safe nails. Calm pets. All staff fingers still attached. ✔️

𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗣𝗲𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄
We all love a sunny Perth day, but extreme heat can be dangerous for pets. Please take extra care this week, especially in the middle of the day.

𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗽𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲
• Keep fresh, cool water available at all times
• Walk dogs early morning or later in the evening
• Do the 𝟳-𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 on pavements. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for paws
• Provide shade and a cool, well-ventilated space to rest
• Avoid intense exercise and excitement during the hottest parts of the day
• 𝗡𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥 leave pets in cars, even for a short time

𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀
• Heavy panting or noisy breathing
• Excessive drooling
• Pacing or agitation
• Lethargy, wobbliness, weakness, collapse

If you have 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆. Heat stroke is an emergency, and early treatment matters.

😂🐶 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬 𝐑𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞 (𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐞-𝐃𝐨𝐝𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐞) 🐶😂

Miss Rogue has officially been released on good behaviour and is now living her best, cone-free life ✨

Rogue first came to us after surgery for an aural haematoma - A collection of blood that builds up between the skin and cartilage of the ear flap. These usually happen when dogs shake their heads or scratch a sore ear a bit too enthusiastically (we see you, itchy ears 👀)

Unfortunately for Rogue, hers decided it wasn’t done with us yet and made a dramatic return… cue surgery round two.

What followed was a long three-week recovery filled with ups, downs, rechecks… and Rogue repeatedly proving she was far smarter than her cone of shame 😅 If there was a way to sneak around it, bend it, or pretend it didn’t exist — Rogue found it.

After weeks of patience, persistence, and us seeing her gorgeous face a lot, she was finally given the all clear and had her sutures removed 🎉

While we adored our frequent visits with Rogue, we’re fairly confident her dad is thrilled to no longer receive appointment reminder text messages every few days 📱😂

Well done, Rogue — ears healed, cone defeated, freedom achieved 💙🐾

🐾 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗳𝘆'𝘀 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝘆 🐾
Miss Saffy came in to be desexed recently, and she was an absolute sweetheart 💕
Her visit also gives us the purr-fect excuse to talk about female cat desexing… and those dramatic heat cycles 😅

🌸 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗲𝘅 𝗳𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝘀🌸
Desexing (spaying) means removing the ovaries and uterus — and it comes with some pretty great perks:
- No surprise kittens 🐱🐱🐱
- No heat cycles (aka midnight yowling, rolling on the floor like a possum, and flirting with furniture)
- Reduced risk of nasty uterine infections (pyometra)
- A much lower risk of mammary cancer later in life
Basically: fewer hormones, more peace and quiet 😌

🔔 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲 (𝗮𝗸𝗮 “𝗪𝗛𝗬 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴?!”)
Female cats can come into heat as young as 4–5 months old. When they’re in heat, you might notice:
- Very loud, very dramatic vocal performances 🎶
- Excessive affection (even with table legs)
- Rolling, crouching, and a lot of “look at me” behaviour
Unlike dogs, 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗴𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝟮–𝟯 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝘀 during breeding season — because once clearly isn’t enough 🙃

🩺 𝗜𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗲𝘅 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗲’𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁?
Short answer: Yes, it usually is.

Longer answer:
When cats are in heat, their reproductive organs have increased blood supply
This can make surgery a little trickier and slightly increase bleeding risk
That said, many cats are safely desexed while on heat every day

Your vet will always assess what’s safest for your cat — and sometimes it’s better to proceed than endure another encore performance 🎤

Miss Saffy recovered beautifully and is now heading into a future with:
✔️ No heats
✔️ No hormone-fuelled chaos
✔️ Much quieter nights for her humans

🐶💖 Superstar Patient Alert: Miss Rosie 💖🐶
Miss Rosie visited us today for an ear flush under anaesthetic after battling a very painful ear infection. Her ears were far too sore to treat while awake, so this allowed us to safely and thoroughly clean them and give her the relief she needed.
She was an absolute superstar from start to finish ⭐
Although we suspect she may have been practising a bit of selective hearing lately… turns out it wasn’t ignoring her humans — it was her sore ears all along! 😉

🐶 Ear Infections in Dogs – Quick Guide for Pet Parents 🐾

Ear infections are common and uncomfortable. Early treatment is key!

🚩 Signs to Watch For
• Head shaking or scratching
• Red, sore, smelly ears
• Discharge or pain when touched

✅ DO
✔️ Book a vet check early
✔️ Use only prescribed ear medication
✔️ Finish the full course
✔️ Keep ears dry

❌ DON’T
❌ Use old or human ear drops
❌ Clean painful ears without advice
❌ Use cotton buds
❌ Ignore ongoing symptoms

🩺 When Is an Ear Flush Under Anaesthetic Needed?
Your vet may recommend this if the ear is very painful, severely inflamed, full of thick debris, or not improving with treatment. It allows safe, thorough cleaning and better healing.

🌾 When Sneezing Becomes a “Seed-ious” Problem! 🌾

Meet Xena, who came in after an epic sneezing marathon that just wouldn’t stop! After a little sedation (and a lot of snoot inspection), our team discovered the culprit — a grass seed lodged up her nostril! 😳🐶

Grass seeds might look innocent, but these pesky hitchhikers can sneak their way into noses, ears, eyes, paws, and even under the skin — causing pain, infection, and lots of discomfort for our furry friends.

👉 Top tips to protect your pet:
🌿 Check your pet’s coat, ears, and paws after walks — especially in long grass.
🚫 Keep lawns trimmed and avoid seedy areas during spring and summer.
🐾 If your pet starts sneezing, shaking their head, or licking a paw excessively — it’s time for a vet visit!

Xena is now breathing easy again (and hopefully steering clear of grassy adventures for a while!). 💚

☀️With warmer weather brings fruity summer snacks 🐶🍉

It’s important to remember that not all fruits are safe for dogs.
Unfortunately, Halco recently found out the hard way after stealing some mango without realising it was the pip!
Luckily his mum was on to it instantly and called us immediately, we were able to assist him safely bring it up and return to being the cheeky pup he is🏥💛

Here’s a reminder of what’s safe and not safe for your furry friends this summer:

✅ Safe in moderation:
🍉 Watermelon (seedless)
🍌 Banana
🍎 Apple (no core or seeds)
🍓 Strawberries
🍍 Pineapple

🚫 Not safe:
🥭 Mango pips (can cause blockages)
🍇 Grapes & sultanas (toxic)
🍒 Cherries (pits and stems are dangerous)
🍊 Citrus fruits (can upset tummies)
🍑 Stone fruits (watch for pits)

If your dog ever eats something they shouldn’t — like a fruit stone or pip — call us right away. Acting quickly can make all the difference 💙
