Share your thoughts! Whether it’s through a conversation with a friend or writing down your thoughts in a journal, getting your thoughts out of your head can be incredibly beneficial for cutting down on stress and working through your issues.

Be mindful of your intake of stimulants and depressants such as alcohol, caffeine, and sugar. Too much of any of these things can wreak havoc on your stress levels.

Try to avoid caffeine and sugar in large amounts, especially in the second half of your day (before you go to sleep).

Additionally, if you’re someone who uses alcohol to cope with stress, try introducing new methods for self-soothing. Alcohol can deplete your energy both in the short- and long-term, mess with your hormones, and contribute to systemic inflammation that can lead to many chronic health issues.

Boundaries are the internal set of rules that we establish for ourselves. They outline what behaviors we will and won’t accept, how much time and space we need from others, and what priorities we have.

Having a healthy set of boundaries are essential because they help us determine how we respect ourselves, take care of our well-being, and ultimately make decisions that affect the rest of our lives, including both short- and long-term decisions that impact our stress levels.

So what exactly is burnout? It’s the accumulation of excessive stressors over time, which ultimately results in unmanageable stress levels that lead to psychological and physical health issues. The term came into fruition to describe people who work in “helping” professions (like doctors and nurses), but it can happen to anyone.
