🌟 What Is a Stress Fracture?
A stress fracture is a tiny crack in the bone caused by repetitive load. It’s often too small to show on an X-ray and, if ignored, can progress to a complete fracture.
Common Areas:
Hip • Shin • Foot — especially in runners and anyone doing high-load, repetitive activity.
Symptoms to Watch For:
- Gradual onset pain during or after exercise
- Pain that worsens with continued activity
- Morning-after soreness
- Eventually, difficulty maintaining usual training levels
Who’s at Higher Risk?
People with low bone strength (e.g., osteoporosis), low calcium/Vitamin D, poor footwear, weak supporting muscles, or inefficient biomechanics.
Diagnosis & Treatment:
Because they’re hard to see on X-ray, stress fractures are confirmed with MRI or bone scans.
🔹 Rest is essential — most need around 6 weeks to heal
🔹 Some areas (like the navicular) may require a boot or cast
🔹 Address underlying factors: footwear, technique, strength deficits
If you’re experiencing persistent load-related pain, chat with your physiotherapist to get assessed early and prevent further injury.
