Becoming Plan Managed: What It Means for You
If you’ve recently changed from self-managed to plan-managed with the NDIS, you might be wondering what’s different. Sometimes, the NDIS makes this change for you, which can feel a bit confusing at first.
Don’t worry — you still get to choose the support workers and providers you want, as long as they fit within your NDIS plan and follow NDIS rules.
The main difference is how your supports get paid.
What Changes When You Move to Plan Management
When you’re plan managed, you don’t have to pay your providers yourself or claim money back from the NDIS anymore.
Your plan manager does that for you.
How Invoices Work
• Your providers send their invoices straight to your plan manager.
• Your plan manager checks that the invoice matches your NDIS plan.
• They then send it to the NDIS for approval and pay the provider once it’s approved.
• You’ll get a monthly statement showing what’s been paid.
You don’t need to log into the NDIS portal or handle payments yourself anymore.
If something on an invoice is missing or incorrect, your plan manager will ask the provider to fix it before it’s paid.
Invoices must include:
• The right support item number
• The dates the service was provided
• The correct NDIS price rate
Payment Timeframes
When you were self-managed, you paid first and claimed the money back.
Now, your plan manager handles that for you.
Because there’s an extra step, payments can take a little longer:
• Plan managers usually process invoices within 1–3 business days.
• The NDIS can take up to 10 business days to release the funds.
• Banks may take 1 business day to show the payment.
Most plan managers work quickly, so payments are often done faster than this.
Capped Hourly Rates
The NDIS sets maximum prices (called capped rates) for many supports.
This means:
• Providers can’t charge more than the NDIS maximum rate.
• If they do, the NDIS will only pay up to the capped amount.
• You’d need to pay the extra yourself if the provider charges more.
Invoices also need to use the correct support item number. If something doesn’t match your plan, it might be sent back or declined.
Using Different Providers
When you’re plan managed, you can use both registered and unregistered providers — as long as what they offer is allowed under your NDIS plan and follows NDIS rules.
In short:
Being plan managed means less paperwork for you.
Your plan manager takes care of payments and claims, while you stay in control of choosing your supports.
