Spotted: Speechie in the wild having a very important conversation… with puppets 👀🐻

Puppets are more than just soft, cuddly friends that bring smiles. In our clinic, they’re one of our favourite tools we use every week to build early language skills, grow vocabulary, and yes… sometimes help “taste test” all the pretend food during sessions too 😄

Puppet Activity: “Let’s Learn New Words”

Puppets are a fun, low-pressure way to build early vocabulary 💛

Use a puppet and a few toys or picture cards (cup, ball, car, spoon, dog). The puppet picks up an item and talks with the child.

Focus on:

Naming objects
Action words (eat, drink, jump)
Simple descriptions (big, small)
2-word phrases (e.g. “big ball”, “drink cup”)

Keep it playful and repetitive. Let the puppet “learn” from the child and model lots of language along the way.

Who wouldn’t want to be a speechie 💛

Back in March, Ms Rachael had the opportunity to be part of the Careers in Health Breakfast for the third time, and it was such a genuinely inspiring morning to be part of.

As a proud JCU Alumni, her passion for speech pathology runs deep, but what really makes it special is the chance to support families and their little ones every single day.

We also love welcoming work experience students into our clinic each year and sharing what being a speechie is really like. One of our favourite moments from the breakfast was when a past student came up to say that after spending just one week with our team, she is now pursuing a career in Speech Pathology.

Safe to say we all had goosebumps ✨

It is moments like this that remind us why we do what we do.

Next time you see your speechie or any allied health professional, let them know you appreciate them. It truly means the world 💫

Small Sprouts turns 5 🌱

Five years ago, Small Sprouts was just an idea… and today it’s grown into something so special.

We’ve had the privilege of welcoming so many incredible families and therapists into our space, being part of children’s journeys as they grow, connect and find their voice, and even adding a few baby sprouts along the way. 💛 That will always be the most important part of what we do.

Along the way, there’s also been:
☕ A few thousand coffees from Pauls Bread
🛍️ More Kmart trips than we’d like to admit
🫧 Thousands of bubbles blown (which has definitely helped us cut down on washing liquid 😅)

It hasn’t always been easy, but it has always been worth it.

We’re so grateful for every family who has trusted us, every therapist who has been part of the team, and everyone who has supported Small Sprouts over the past five years.

Here’s to everything still to come. 🌱💛

Last week, Ms Georgie and Miss Stella ran Curious Chemists. 🔬✨

The clinic was full of excitement, laughter, and a few “mini explosions” along the way! 💥😄

Our little scientists followed instructions, read steps, and worked together to complete their experiments like true chemists in the making.

They had so much fun creating marshmallow slime, playdough, and erupting volcanoes. 🌋🧪

So much learning, teamwork, and messy fun all in one session! 🌱
