This week we said a big “see you soon” to Ms Maddie as she heads off on maternity leave 💙

As our Client Services Officer, Ms Maddie is the friendly voice on the phone, the welcoming face at the front desk, and the one who keeps our busy clinic running smoothly behind the scenes. Our families and team are so lucky to have her.

We’re so excited for her as she gets ready to welcome a baby boy into her beautiful little family.

We’ll miss you, Maddie, but we can’t wait to meet your little man and see you back at Sprouts soon! 🌿

Why visuals?

Because they make learning and communicating easier and way more fun!

At Small Sprouts, we use pictures, symbols, and visual schedules to help children:
✨ Share what they’re thinking
✨ Know what’s coming next
✨ Build confidence in their communication

Nothing beats the smile on a child’s face when a visual helps them connect! (You should see our ever-growing stash of visuals, it’s impressive!)

The best part? Visuals aren’t just for the clinic. We’ve put together three sets you can use at home or daycare:

🚽 Core Vocabulary
🎒 Daycare Routines
🍓 Food and Drink

Want to see them in action or grab your own? Swing by the clinic, we’d love to show you! 💙

We bet you didn’t know what we really do all day at Small Sprouts!

✨ What Do Speechies Actually Do? ✨
It’s so much more than just helping kids talk. Our Speech Pathologists support children with all kinds of communication needs, including understanding and using language, building vocabulary, developing sounds and sentences, and strengthening social interaction skills. We also help with feeding and swallowing, early literacy, and using communication supports when words are hard to use.

Language skills for little Sprouts (0–5 years) 🌱

Language isn’t just talking. It’s how children understand, share, and connect with the world around them.

For little ones, this can look like:
✨ Babbling and first words – learning to make sounds and say their name
✨ Understanding words – knowing what “come here” or “more juice” means
✨ Making sentences – combining words like “I want ball”
✨ Asking and answering questions – “Where’s Teddy?” or “Yes!”
✨ Using gestures and expressions – pointing, waving, or showing feelings

Every smile, giggle, or word is a step towards building strong communication skills 💬💛

🖐 Raise your hand if you’ve heard of sign language and thought it was all the same… surprise! Not all signs are the same, and Key Word Sign (KWS) is a little different.

✨ All About Key Word Sign ✨
KWS uses simple signs alongside spoken words to support understanding and expression. It’s not Auslan, it’s not a “simplified” version, and it’s not meant to replace speech. Instead, it gives children another way to communicate while they’re still learning their words.

💡 Top tip: Check whether the signs you’re teaching your little Sprout are Australian or American — it can make a big difference!

KWS can help reduce frustration, support confidence, and make everyday communication easier for children of all ages, from late talkers to neurodivergent kids and more.

At Small Sprouts, play is never just play 💚

It’s where conversations begin, imaginations grow, and communication skills come to life. And yes, that includes messy, colourful fun with paint! Every brush stroke, colour choice, and giggle helps children naturally feel more confident to:

🌱 Try new words and sounds
🌱 Describe what they see and feel
🌱 Share ideas with friends
🌱 Build confidence through play

Because learning through play is where the magic happens ✨

🎨 Playdough Fun = Language Boost!

Did you know that squishing, rolling, and shaping playdough isn’t just messy fun? It’s also great for language development!

How it helps:

🔴Builds vocabulary as children describe what they’re making

🟠Encourages following instructions (“roll a snake, then a ball”)

🟡Supports sequencing and storytelling skills

🟢Sparks conversations and imagination

Next time your little one grabs the dough, join in and chat about textures, shapes, and stories. Play + talk = language growth! 💚
