Even though saying someone is always happy might seem nice, it’s just not true 🧐

This myth suggests that people with Down syndrome don’t feel the full range of emotions, but they feel sadness, fear, anger, and even anxiety 😓😝🥴🤭🤪😲

In fact, people with Down syndrome are actually at a higher risk of depression and anxiety than others, which is important to know as it often goes untreated ☹️

Carve out a private space in your home where your child can relax, feel secure, and be safe 🏡

This will involve organizing and setting boundaries in ways your child can understand. Visual cues can be helpful, try colored tape marking areas the area, adding curtains around their chill out zone or providing a special comfortable clothing item to wear while they are using their safety space 🥰

Expert guidelines about antidepressants can be confusing 🥴
They depend on a variety of factors, including:

⭐️The type of prescription you take
⭐️Your dosage
⭐️The number of depressive episodes you’ve had
⭐️Your risk of relapse

Under American Psychiatric Association guidelines, if you are taking an antidepressant for your first depressive episode, you should stay on it for at least 4 or 5 months after your symptoms of depression stop. 🌻
Keep in mind that you may need to try several different antidepressants to find the right option for you, and even then, it can take 2 or 3 weeks to see an initial improvement.
After that, it can take 3 to 6 months for symptoms to improve to the point that you are no longer depressed. 😊
Altogether, this could mean taking a prescription for about a year to get the full benefits. ⏰

If you have ongoing major depressive disorder, or you have had three or more depressive episodes, the APA recommends treatment for at least a few years.
Doctors may also recommend longer treatment when the risk of relapse is high.

Kids & teens are still exploring and learning about the world!

You may find you are faced with countless questions, from what you are doing to more intimate questions about yourself.
If the questions get too invasive, it’s okay to say, “I’m not comfortable with answering that.”

Some people with autism do also have an accompanying intellectual disability and some people don’t 🙋
Autism Spectrum Disorder is not an intellectual disability, but a common developmental disability that affects a person's ability to engage and interact with the world around them 🌏

There is a wide range of skills, abilities and communication levels among people on the Autism Spectrum ⚽️
Some autistic people can speak and communicate verbally, while others don’t.
Not only is there a complete range in communication and many other areas, even those with late developing speech develop at different rates and to different levels 💬

Young people with ASD may have a hard time applying what they’ve learned in one setting (such as the therapist’s office or school) to others, including the home 🏡

For example, your child may use sign language at school to communicate, but never think to do so at home. Creating consistency in your child’s environment is the best way to reinforce learning.
Find out what your child’s therapists are doing and continue their techniques at home. Explore the possibility of having therapy take place in more than one place in order to encourage your child to transfer what he or she has learned from one environment to another.
It’s also important to be consistent in the way you interact with your child and deal with challenging behaviors 💬
