The Australasian College of Dermatologists suggests checking your skin from head to toe every three months (with the change of each season).

Here’s how to check your skin for skin cancers…

Find a well-lit room with enough space to inspect every part of your body. For your back this means also having a mirror accessible to you or better still ask a family member or friend to check your back.

Start at the head and work down your body, this includes your hair line, neck, fingers, elbows, behind your legs and soles of your feet. Be thorough and make sure you double check you’ve looked at your whole body. To make this easier you can take photos of your skin to remember what it looks like.

Take note of anything that changes, whether it is size, shape or colour. If you notice changes, make a note of this and book an appointment with your GP.

Take note of new spots. If you notice new spots appearing, particularly on your back, neck, hairline or soles of your feet, book an appointment with your GP.

Every year in Australia, skin cancers account for around 80% of all newly diagnosed cancers.

The sooner a skin cancer is identified and treated, the better your chance of avoiding surgery or, in the case of a serious melanoma or other skin cancer, potential disfigurement or even death.

Become familiar with the look of your skin, particularly spots and moles, so you can pick up any changes that might suggest a skin cancer and report them to your doctor.

There has been a significant development in ADHD care in Queensland.

Recently, QLD Health Minister Tim Nicholls announced that, from 1 December, GPs will be able to assess, diagnose, and manage ADHD in adults without requiring a prior psychiatry assessment.

ULFP doctors Dr Katherine Holzhauser and Dr Katie Williamson developed Kaleidoscope Clinic as a specialist GP service to both coordinate and provide Neurodiversity and Gender Diversity Care.

Dr Katie said this change is very exciting news for those who have been unable to access a psychiatrist.

"However, some patients will still benefit from the input of a psychiatrist."

In the coming weeks, Dr Katherine and Dr Katie will be developing a patient booking and assessment process that outlines what is required and who may or may not benefit from a GP assessment.

"ADHD assessments are far more than a checklist of ADHD symptoms. Adults with ADHD symptoms can often have an alternative cause for their symptoms, such as disordered sleep, depression, substance use disorders and brain injury, which need to be thoroughly explored," Dr Katie said.

This booking and assessment process will be shared as soon as possible ahead of 1 December, so please follow ULFP on social media or check the website for updates.

Some adult ADHD facts:
- Adult ADHD often differs from childhood ADHD in that symptoms of hyperactivity tend to decrease and become less obvious, sometimes appearing as internal restlessness or fidgeting instead of overt running around. In contrast, inattention and impulsivity symptoms frequently persist into adulthood, with their impact becoming more apparent in adult responsibilities like work, finances, and relationships.
- Oestrogen is good for the ADHD brain, so perimenopausal women with ADHD often find their symptoms get worse at this time of life.
- Symptoms of ADHD do not start in adulthood, they are present from childhood but may have gone undiagnosed.
- Co-occurring mental health conditions such as bipolar disorder can get much worse if mistreated with ADHD medications.

This week is National Skin Cancer Action Week.

This year, the Cancer Council is joining forces with The Australasian College of Dermatologists to encourage all Australians to make sun protection a daily habit to protect their skin from UV exposure and reduce the risk of developing skin cancer.

Incidental sun exposure adds up - when we’re out doing daily activities, such as walking the dog, gardening or hanging out the washing, we can get caught off guard by UV radiation we’re not aware of.

Protecting our skin during those ‘incidental’ moments of sun exposure will reduce our risk of developing skin cancer.

So remember to slip, slop, slap, seek and slide when you next go outside.
