ARC Disability Services ARC is a community-based organisation providing disability support for over 45 years in Cairns.

Established in 1976 by a group of parents with a vision for their children, we pride ourselves on being person focused, friendly, flexible and fun! Our Vision is that people who have a disability are empowered to reach their full potential, dreams and aspirations, enabling them to enjoy a fulfilling life of their choosing as valued members of the community. We work collaboratively with our service users, their support networks and the community to facilitate a range of options and opportunities which promote active participation for all.

This is a fantastic opportunity for people in regional areas to participate in co-design, which provides people with lived experience of disability the chance to be part of shaping an inclusive future.

By attending this workshop you will:
โ€ข be clear about what co-design is and isnโ€™t
โ€ข know why co-design is needed
โ€ข have an increased awareness of the roles and responsibilities of people commonly involved in co-design processes
โ€ข feel confident, empowered and equipped to contribute as a co-designer

This workshop is designed for family members of people with disability.

Weโ€™re happy to share that the ARC Holiday House is back in full swing after the Christmas break, and bookings for 2026 are now open! ๐Ÿ  If youโ€™ve been thinking about scheduling a stay, now is a great time to get in early.

Last night, we also said farewell to Jack, who had his final stay with us before his family moves out of the area. Jack has been a familiar face at the Holiday House and at ARC Cafรฉ Connect where he helps out, and especially loves to cook! He even helped prepare delicious pizzas during his last night with us. ๐Ÿ•

The Bureau of Meteorology advises a tropical low is approaching the northeast Queensland coast over the next few days.

It is expected to bring locally intense rainfall and damaging winds from later today (Friday) continuing over the weekend. Conditions may ease on Saturday evening north of Innisfail.
Locally intense rainfall causing flash flooding and dangerous driving conditions. Six hourly rainfall totals between 90 to 100mm with isolated falls more than 250mm possible.

Damaging winds causing debris like fallen trees, powerlines could come down, and the power could go out. Winds averaging 65km/h with wind gusts to 90km/h.
โ€ข BoM has issued a Tropical Cyclone Advice and track map for this tropical low.
โ€ข There is no current risk of tide exceeding Highest Astronomical Tide (HAT).
โ€ข Separate flood warning for Mulgrave and Russell River and marine warnings are available from the Bureau of Meteorology Queensland website.

โ€ข Households should keep a store of drinking water to prepare for any disruptions to water supply. In the event water supply is temporarily unavailable, collect rainwater or use pool water for flushing toilets.
โ€ข If living near water ways, preparing your home for risk of surface water inundation.
โ€ข Park your car under cover and away from trees, powerlines, and flood risk.
โ€ข Secure and store loose outdoor items, such as outdoor furniture, trampolines and roofing material.
โ€ข Prepare for potential power outages.
โ€ข Review your usual transport routes and consider possibility of isolation with low lying bridges and roads.
โ€ข Share this information with friends, family, and neighbours.

โ€ข Use your Person-Centred Emergency Plan now if you have one.
โ€ข Make sure you have medication close by and accessible.
โ€ข If anyone in your house uses powered medical equipment, like a dialysis machine or ventilator, decide now How you will manage/where you will go in case you lose power.
โ€ข Call your support person or service to organise transport if you need to leave. Leaving early is safer than waiting.
If you are a tourist, visitor, camper or caravanner:
โ€ข Campers and caravanners should ask the campground owners whether your site/grounds flood.
โ€ข Check road conditions and plan your route should you need you leave.
โ€ข Be ready to move if the situation gets worse.
โ€ข Check your surroundings of water catchments and monitor for flash flood.

It's with a heavy heart that we announce that our Chief Operations Officer Sarah Dart will be leaving ARC at the end of the month.

Sarah joined ARC in 2018, and since then has been a constant source of professionalism and leadership. From navigating the early days of the NDIA rollout to steering ARC through the challenges of COVID-19, her efforts ensured ARC remained compliant, resilient and forward-thinking during unprecedented times.
