Tobias - Growing Against All Odds

Tobias - Growing Against All Odds Tobias contracted Meningococcal Septicemia at 4.5 months old. He survived, became an amputee, and continues to defy the odds.

His journey is a testament to resilience, family, community, and the will to thrive against all challenges thrown his way.

We are so blessed living where we do!
In a very last minute, "can we afford this? F**k no. Let's go!" moment, we booked the long weekend away with the kids in a little fishing town down the road!
Because it was so random and last minute, we didn't bother checking the weather πŸ˜… lots of heavy rain, nature walks, fishing, and pool chills were had and it was just what we needed to finish off the school holidays!
Thanks for having us
We can't wait to return.

Tobias and I had a bit of a hectic 24 hours... πŸ₯΄
We caught a flight to Townsville for an appointment and laser surgery session. We had to leave dad and the older kids at home this time.
He also has massive issues atm seeing anyone in scrubs/uniform πŸ˜” so the first appointment straight from the plane was not fun.
We went from there to have a late lunch and settle into our home away from home at with some new toys ❀️

Unfortunately, with his last admission in Cairns over new years, the anesthetist last night decided it was too risky going ahead with GA today, and I completely understand! We don't want to risk anything going wrong for Tobias when it could be prevented! It could have also been cancelled well ahead of us arriving if the right people spoke to the right team. This isn't one person's fault, it's a lot of missed communication from a lot of people. Lesson learnt. And yet another thing I can add to my list to do myself next time just to be sure 😴

We had a sleep, didn't have to fast this morning πŸŽ‰ so had some breakfast πŸ₯ž went to say a quick hello and goodbye to kids ward, Tobias had a nap and we got onto another flight home!
So thankful Tobias flies so well ✈️
Let's hope it doesn't happen again any time soon, (sickness or change in appointments) and we get a new surgical date for his scars soon!!

Now, happy and at home, mum is going to rest and get ready for whatever next week brings πŸ˜‰ It's not always fun and games, there is a lot going on behind the scenes in Tobias' journey, and it's really tough sometimes.
But, we remain thankful every day that we get to live this life and have him home with us, and continuously learning things on the way!

Tobias is home ❀️

It was another scare for us. No one wants to see their baby lethargic, unresponsive and not well! And for us, it brings back a lot of triggers and we don't stuff around!

We are just thankful to have a team at Cairns Base for our kids in the community who care and get onto everything so quickly! And they really do love their jobs.

We hope everyone has had a great Christmas and New Year's break and are well onto the way for a great 2026! πŸŽ‰

Well, two weeks ago when we came for a Christmas party, we didn't believe we'd end up spending New Year's here too!! πŸ˜‚

In true Tobias style, he's saving some firsts for years to come. His birthday and Christmas at home and not the hospital were enough for 2025, and he seems to believe we can save new years for 2026/2027 to be home for πŸ€¦πŸ½β€β™€οΈπŸ«£

He woke up later than usual the other day, and began vomiting and became lethargic way too quickly for us to comfortably sit at home with no answers for why it came on so fast!

All tests so far have thrown negative results, which is great! But also leaves a lot unanswered as to where this little setback has come from!
We are hopeful that this is one way his body responds to his teething/cutting. But no definite on this.
He woke up this morning much better after some fluids, sugars and antibiotics, and we even managed a little walk in the breeze this afternoon before the rain set back in from the sea!

Here's allllll our everything crossed that next week's Townsville trip for his appointments is smooth sailing and in and out like we have planned! Haha

It's a wet and cosy morning here in Cairns.
We won't be doing much today except dipping into our very special Christmas hamper from Kenfrost Homes and Tropical Heart Support Coordination β€οΈπŸŽ„β€οΈ

Tobias was a little worried about the size of the ham until he realised we eat it, it doesn't eat us πŸ˜‚ and then he noticed all the other favourites inside the basket.

We hope everyone has stocked up for the festive season and you can enjoy the next few days of "what day is it actually?" πŸ™Š

Another Christmas Party done for these guys πŸ₯°

Last night we were invited to the Cairns Base Hospital Children's Ward Christmas Party hosted with help by Event Cinemas and it was sssoooo exciting!
Lots of fun in the (amazing) playground, a red carpet entrance, a school room turned into a disco party, Santa arriving by firetruck and escorted in by some of the fire department team, some food, face painting, balloons, and most importantly, bubbles!!!!
No child left unseen, staff having a ball, kids enjoying every moment inside a place they may not be able to leave for Christmas.
It was exactly the kind of magic we love to see pouring into our community of kids ❀️
Thank you so much team for a really fantastic night!!

πŸŽ„ MEMORY MONDAY πŸŽ„

Tobias' First Christmas was a little different for sure!
Ronald McDonald House Charities North Australia put on an amazing afternoon of Santa, activities, Townsville Fire and North Queensland Cowboys ambassadors showing up for the kids, bbq dinner, and a very special trip in a bus to see the Christmas lights!
Not one family had to miss out on a little celebration out of the hospital and this was Tobias' first ever visit off hospital grounds in over 3 months! It was a very special time and something we won't ever forget!

πŸŽ‰ THANK YOU πŸŽ‰

Our community has blown us away !!
This is a hard time of year for a lot of people, not just us.
It's hard for us to reach out and ask for help.
Our situation is unfortunate and something we never planned or prepared for in our lifetime or Tobias'!
He has taught us so much in his 19months of life and he will continue to do so for the rest of his life!
Your help, as a community, towards helping us get a van to modify for his wheelchair to access this amazing community is not going unnoticed!

Watch this space for another update in the coming days towards fundraising, and a lot more Christmas holiday antics from us for Tobias' first Christmas at Home
