🚫 MYTH: “Bowel incontinence is just age-related… it’s normal.”
✅ FACT: While ageing can reduce bowel motility and contribute to changes in muscle tone, bowel incontinence is never a normal part of getting older.
There are many treatable causes, and with the right assessment, most people experience significant improvement.
Loss of muscle strength, pelvic floor dysfunction, nerve changes, previous childbirth, chronic constipation, or underlying colorectal conditions can all play a role. But none of these mean you simply must ‘live with it’.
💛 The good news:
Dr Boris Ruggiero specialises in diagnosing and treating bowel incontinence with compassion, advanced testing, and tailored treatment plans that often don't require surgery. They include pelvic floor therapy, anorectal manometry, and sacral nerve stimulation when appropriate.
