What is Cone-rod Dystrophy, or CORD?

CORD is a group of inherited eye disorders, which cause vision loss over time. CORD can also occur spontaneously. The cones and rods, which are light-sensitive cells in the retina, slowly deteriorate, affecting your perception of colours, depth, amd peripheral vision. People with CORD may also get spots in their vision, and have a heightened sensitivity to light.

According to the Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA) there are over 2 million sufferers of CORD worldwide, and are the leading cause of blindness in working age adults. Unfortunately, there isn’t a cure for CORD (yet) but there is promising research into stem cell and gene therapy.
Management includes:
regular eye checks, no matter the level of your vision
orientation and mobility training
using low vision aids such as magnifier, closed-circuit televisions and technology and apps on your devices
educational support for students at school or university
extra lighting if you need help in dark environments
not smoking
having a healthy diet - remember those green leafy veges!

What a striking picture! 💥 Dubbed the ‘Eye of Sauron’ (from the popular Lord of the Rings series), this photo comes from a rare ophthalmology case!

Specifically, the bright red and orange glow comes from spoke-like iris transillumination defects, due to pigment dispersion syndrome, due to flakes of the iris coming loose and floating in the eye’s clear fluid. The patient also had high eye pressure, so he underwent laser therapy to drain the fluid and decrease the pressure.

Have you heard of Floppy Eyelid Syndrome, or FES?

This occurs when the eyelids becomes overly flexible, and can be easily turned inside-out. Both lids can be affected, but the upper lid is the most common. There may also be some inflammation, and small bumps on the inside of the eyelid.

Symptoms include irritation in the eyes, sensitivity to light, very watery eyes (especially just after waking up), swelling, the feeling of something inside your eye, and may even block your visual field.

Side sleepers can have problems with the pillow rubbing on the cornea, causing abrasions that may develop into ulcers. Lubricants and ointments can relieve the symptoms, but it’s important to find the underlying cause, and treat it if possible.

There are a few potential causes, including obstructive sleep apnea, mechanical stress (from frequently rubbing the eye), or changes in the elastin fibers of the lid.

If you’ve noticed any of these symptoms, help is at hand. Ask for a referral to Dr Karpa, an experienced Oculoplastic Surgeon, to discuss your options.

Love a bold eyeshadow look? So do we! Here’s a few tips to keep in mind when applying makeup!

💄 Choose quality, over quantity! The price of makeup doesn’t necessarily relate to value. It you find a product you like and have no reaction to, keep using it!

🧼 Keep it clean: when applying products around the eyes, cleanliness is key! Always wash your brushes, applicators, and hands.

🧴 Always do a test with new products, in case you’re sensitive or allergic to it. Use a test swab on your forearm or neck, and watch it for redness, swelling, or itchiness.

👀 False lashes? Be careful you don’t get the glue in your eye, and that not too many of your natural lashes are pulled out when you remove them.

🫧It’s important to cleanse your face and eyes daily to remove any residue, especially around the lashes. Bugs love living in the build up left behind, such as mascara and the glue from false lashes.

Any sign of irritation or inflammation we recommend that you stop using the product immediately. Seek medical assistance if it persists.

Have you noticed that Johnny Depp almost always wears tinted glasses? 🕶️

This may be due to his eye issues! Depp revealed that he is “blind as a bat” in his left eye, and has severe nearsightedness in his right eye. He also had amblyopia (a lazy eye) and had to undergo patching treatment when he was a child, which could be the reason for the reduce vision. If not caught early enough, amblyopia can have life long implications.

His glasses are prescription lenses, helping him to see clearer. He stated that when acting in roles where he can’t wear spectacles he basically can’t see a thing. Tinted lenses can help reduce glare and to improve depth perception! Or maybe he wears them simply because they looks cool!

Optical illusions are so fun, just like this one - called Troxler’s effect! Focus on the middle of the picture, and don’t blink! After about half a minute, you’ll notice all the colour begins to fade away into pure grey.

But why do these illusions work? How are they tricking our eyes? 🤔

Basically, our eyes are very good at gathering information and sending it to our brains, where that information is turned into perception. Our brain recognises ‘rules’ in our vision, and will often help fill in gaps when needed. Because we see so many things at once, sometimes our brain takes shortcuts to create a vision that makes sense.

Optical illusions take advantage of these shortcuts and how our brain fills in gaps. With the Troxler effect, your brain doesn’t notice the colours moving or changing, so it allows them to slowly fade into a more cohesive and monotone background!

When it comes to glaucoma, catching and diagnosing as early as possible is crucial! This is because treatment can’t recover damage that’s already occurred, but it can help to prevent any further damage!

In Australia, glaucoma affects 1 in 200 people aged forty or younger, and there are over 300,000 people with the condition. Half of these people are unaware they have something potentially blinding.
Symptoms to look out for include:

Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma
Gradual vision loss, starting with the sides Halos around lights
Hazy vision
Tunnel vision
NB: there i no pain or discomfort

Acute Angle Closure Glaucoma
Sudden blurry vision
Nausea and vomiting
Eye pain
Headaches
Vision loss

If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your GP or optometrist immediately for a referral to Dr Karpa, a glaucoma specialist. Early detection is crucial in ensuring the best visual outcome.

People often assume that those who are legally blind have zero vision, but vision loss and legal blindness is actually a spectrum!

In Australia, the most commonly accepted definition of legal blindness (based on the WHO’s standards) is visual acuity of 6/60 (or less, after correction with glasses or contact lenses) on the Snellen chart. Or, if the individual cannot read at 6 metres, what a person with “normal” vision can read from 60 metres away.

Legally blind individuals may also have a very limited range of vision (less than 20 degrees), meaning they cannot see anything in their periphery, or they may have blind spots.

Keep in mind that legal blindness and visual impairment are also somewhat different. If your vision has deteriorated to the point of negatively affecting your daily life (even when wearing glasses or taking corrective measures), see your optometrist for a referral to Best Practice Eyecare for a diagnosis. There may be a treatment we can help you with.

Yesterday was World Diabetes Day! Let’s explore what effects this disease can have on the eyes, and symptoms you should look out for!

Diabetes can cause several eyesight issues, most notably diabetic retinopathy, which causes damage to the blood vessels in the retina. In its early stages, you may not experience any visual symptoms. However, the condition can progress and result in dark spots in your vision, blurred vision, and worsening vision loss, even total blindness.

Diabetic Macular Oedema is also a risk. The macular is responsible for your central and fine vision. Any swelling will cause blurriness when reading, or looking at someone’ face, for example.

To prevent Diabetic Eye Disease, it’s imperative to maintain healthy Blood Sugar Levels (BSL) as well as keeping your blood pressure and cholesterol under control. Smoking to***co, or pregnancy, can also impact the condition.

Diabetes can also increase risk for issues like cataracts, glaucoma, and more. If you notice any blurring, haziness, spots, or missing areas in your vision, make sure to contact your GP or optometrist for a referral and set up an appointment with Dr Karpa and his amazing team as soon as possible.

White walking canes are an incredibly useful tool for those with vision loss, helping them navigate the world more safely and adeptly! 🦯

These canes can be equipped with different tips, all of which have different uses! Let’s go through some:

Marshmallow tip: Lightweight and with a little more surface area, this type of tip picks up more texture and is good for constant contact (rolling the tip over the ground, instead of tapping it).

Ball race tip: Round and slightly smaller than a golf ball, this tip glides across the ground and rotates as it moves, allowing for less friction. It can move from left to right with more ease than other tips.

Pencil tip: A small tip that can pick up on the smallest changes on the ground! This tip is great for the two-point touch method and a very light touch.

Metal glide tip: Made of stainless steel, this tip lasts much longer than most nylon tips. With a rounded outer edge, it’s not only good to pick up textures as it glides along the ground, it provides audio feedback too!

The pièce de résistance is a GPS guided White Cane. Yes!!
