Yesterday was World Diabetes Day! Let’s explore what effects this disease can have on the eyes, and symptoms you should look out for!
Diabetes can cause several eyesight issues, most notably diabetic retinopathy, which causes damage to the blood vessels in the retina. In its early stages, you may not experience any visual symptoms. However, the condition can progress and result in dark spots in your vision, blurred vision, and worsening vision loss, even total blindness.
Diabetic Macular Oedema is also a risk. The macular is responsible for your central and fine vision. Any swelling will cause blurriness when reading, or looking at someone’ face, for example.
To prevent Diabetic Eye Disease, it’s imperative to maintain healthy Blood Sugar Levels (BSL) as well as keeping your blood pressure and cholesterol under control. Smoking to***co, or pregnancy, can also impact the condition.
Diabetes can also increase risk for issues like cataracts, glaucoma, and more. If you notice any blurring, haziness, spots, or missing areas in your vision, make sure to contact your GP or optometrist for a referral and set up an appointment with Dr Karpa and his amazing team as soon as possible.
