During times of stress or anxiety, the body naturally shifts into a protective state.

The diaphragm, our primary breathing muscle ~ can become restricted, leading to shorter, shallower breaths. Over time, this pattern can reinforce feelings of tension, overwhelm, and difficulty switching off.

Long periods of sitting can also contribute, as the body adapts to a more compressed position.

Supporting the diaphragm to release and move more freely can help restore deeper, more natural breathing patterns and with that, a greater sense of calm.

Bowen therapy works gently with these patterns, encouraging the body to soften and rebalance.

The iliopsoas (made up of the psoas major and iliacus) is a deep hip flexor that connects the spine to the legs. Because of its close relationship with the nervous system, it’s often referred to as the body’s “stress muscle.”

When we experience ongoing stress, long periods of sitting, or physical strain, this muscle can remain shortened or overactive. Over time this may contribute to:

• lower back tension
• hip or groin discomfort
• restricted movement
• shallow breathing patterns

As you may have seen in our recent Bowen therapy reel, Kate demonstrated a Bowen move and activation around the iliacus muscle.
