The iliopsoas (made up of the psoas major and iliacus) is a deep hip flexor that connects the spine to the legs. Because of its close relationship with the nervous system, it’s often referred to as the body’s “stress muscle.”

When we experience ongoing stress, long periods of sitting, or physical strain, this muscle can remain shortened or overactive. Over time this may contribute to:

• lower back tension
• hip or groin discomfort
• restricted movement
• shallow breathing patterns

As you may have seen in our recent Bowen therapy reel, Kate demonstrated a Bowen move and activation around the iliacus muscle.

Bowen therapy works beautifully with this muscle group. Gentle, precise movements help the body release protective tension patterns and allow deep muscles like the iliopsoas to soften naturally.

The iliacus joins with the psoas major to form the iliopsoas — one of the body’s primary hip flexor muscles.

Because of its deep connection from the spine to the pelvis and femur, this muscle plays a major role in posture, movement, and stability.
When the iliopsoas becomes shortened or overactive, it can contribute to:

• hip discomfort
• lower back tension
• groin pain
• restricted movement

During late-stage pregnancy, excessive tightness in this area may reduce pelvic mobility. Supporting release and balance can help create more space and comfort as the body adapts.

The iliopsoas is sometimes referred to as the “fight or flight” muscle. In times of stress, it can tighten as part of the body’s protective response. Chronic stress, prolonged sitting, or desk work can keep this muscle in a shortened position — contributing to tension patterns throughout the body.
