Are dating apps dead?
This is the question being asked more recently after research shows that singles are increasingly returning to old school introductions such as speed dating and singles events. So why?
For all the same reasons social media will never be a replacement for face-to-face interaction. See my previous post for further info.
Research shows the most successful online dating demographic have been the 45+ demographic and reasons for this are due to their authenticity and vulnerability online. For others however, the use of online dating apps has shown to increase depression, anxiety, and loneliness leading to gen z and millennials increasingly hitting the delete button on dating apps. Reasons for this include social comparison, ghosting, and chatting that leads nowhere (aka breadcrumbing). My advice? Limit your time spent on dating apps and get face-to-face ASAP.

There’s never been more ways to connect with the people in our lives — so why are we lonelier than ever?

Are you hustling for your self-worth?
When our goal is to be liked and accepted by others, it can trigger shame.
Shame maintains people pleasing behaviour.
Authenticity, is the opposite of shame.
When our goal is to be authentic, then we may still experience frustration, disappointment, and criticism but rarely shame.
The judgement and criticism we receive are no longer attached to your sense of self-worth or feelings of “I’m not good enough”.
Authenticity requires maintaining healthy boundaries with others.
And boundaries are a pre-requisite for compassion & empathy.
"The heart of compassion is acceptance, acceptance of ourselves and others".

Labelling... You're either for or against. Labelling theorists have long argued that if you stick a label on someone they will begin to act in ways, and others will treat them in ways that align with that label even if they didn't before or their prior actions were motivated by some other reason. A bit like a self-fulfilling prophecy. However, a label can also normalise and validate a person's experience. A label can be incredibly therapeutic in this sense and I've seen the relief on people's faces when they receive confirmation that what they've been experiencing is not all in their mind. This commonly occurs with things like learning disorders such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). If you think this might apply to you, I would always encourage you to think about the next steps following a diagnosis. What will be the benefits or disadvantages of receiving a diagnosis? Will it enable access to medication, accomodations & allowances for study, access to funding, or is it just an expensive piece of paper? I currently offer assessment for ADHD and specific learning disabilities. Contact www.seapointpsycholgy.com.au for further information.

It's the feel-good hormone that creates happiness and joy. But how does dopamine work? 🤔

When we do certain things, our brain releases chemicals (neurotransmitters) that affect how we feel. Dopamine acts as a messenger in the brain that creates feelings of pleasure and reward. 🧠

You can start to crave this feeling which can be linked to drug, alcohol and to***co use.

Next time you're reaching for a drink, v**e or cigarette, try boosting your levels of dopamine naturally with one of these hacks. 🥰

Do you ever catch yourself saying, 'you never listen to me', or 'you're so perfect'? 🫤

Words like never, perfect or impossible aren't automatically bad. But if you notice them coming up in your thoughts often, it could mean you're thinking in black and white. ⚫️⚪️

Black and white thinking is the tendency to think in extremes and keeps us from seeing the world as it is: complex and full of grey shades. ☑️

Unfortunately, this all-or-nothing mindset comes at a cost. It can:
💭 harm relationships with others
💭 keep you from learning
💭 limit your career
💭 disrupt healthy eating habits.

If you're having regular black-and-white thoughts, try to reflect more on your thoughts and question whether they're exaggerated or truthful.

Pregnancy & Infant Loss Day
Saturday was world Pregnancy & Infant loss day and grief is one of my favourite topics. Why? Because too often death is stigmatised, pushed into the dark, something that cannot be discussed and this is particularly relevant to pregnancy & infant loss. The damage this causes, when people are unable to grieve openly and talk about their experience without fear of being judged, is immense. When people are unable to process their loss, grief can become repressed, masked, delayed, or exaggerated. When people feel they are supported in their grief they can process painful and sometimes conflicting emotions to find acceptance instead of hiding in the shadows. To be a part of this process is a privilege and an incredibly rewarding experience. 🌸
