During a flare it is usually recommended to rest the affected joint(s). You should still gently move the affected joint(s) as far as is comfortable several times a day as this may help prevent stiffness.

However you should not apply any force or resistance to the affected area. For example, if your wrist is affected, do not use any weights or resistance bands with that arm.

Exercise can be extremely beneficial but resting is usually recommended during a flare.

Hand Therapy Week Day 2: Mallet Finger 👎

“The end of my finger is drooping”
A mallet finger is an injury to the tendon that straightens the end joint of your finger or thumb. This injury can occur when a ball hits the tip of your finger, forcing it to bend further than it is intended to go. In some cases, the tendon ruptures off the bone or there may be a chip of bone that comes off as well (avulsion fracture).

Symptoms:
• Drooping at the end joint of the finger that can’t be actively straightened
• Pain / swelling if an avulsion fracture is present
• Generally, no pain if just a tendon injury
• Potential hyperextension of the middle joint (PIP joint) causing a “swan neck deformity”

What to do after sustaining a mallet finger injury?

Treatment:
• Immobilising the end joint fully straight for 6-8 weeks to allow time for the tendon to successfully heal and reattach back to the tip of the finger.
• Avoiding any heavy and forceful griping
• Depending on the severity of the injury, surgical intervention may be required.

Tennis elbow is a common condition. Despite its name, tennis elbow can affect individuals who don't play tennis, as it's often caused by repetitive motion and overuse of the forearm muscles and tendons.

Symptoms of tennis elbow include pain that worsens with gripping, lifting, or twisting motions involving the wrist and forearm, weakness, stiffness in the elbow joint, especially in the morning or after rest periods and tenderness when touching the affected area.

The treatment of tennis elbow aims to alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and promote healing.

Today marks the start of April Falls Month, and falls continue to be no laughing matter for our elderly and their loves ones. Falls are the country’s leading cause of injury hospitalisation and death, with hospital-related falls occurring more frequently in older people (AIHW, 2023). One in three people over 65 living at home experience a fall per annum. In 2021-2022, there were 233,000 hospitalisations following a fall, and in 2020-2021, sadly 5,800 deaths were caused by a fall (AIHW, 2023).

Physiotherapy has a critical role in improving function and mobility and preventing falls in aged care residents. There is an urgent need for investment in a falls-related fractures and hospitalisations prevention program through physiotherapy-led care in the community. Evidence suggests that 55 per cent of falls can be reduced, with a projected cost saving of $120 million per year if physiotherapy-led falls prevention programs are implemented among residential aged care facility participants.

Visit australian.physio/pre-budget to learn what urgent change we’re seeking from the government to prevent devastating falls occurring to our elderly population.

Every day, 133 older Queenslanders have a fall requiring medical attention đźš‘. Falls have a big impact on mobility and independence and most are also preventable.

There are many practical ways to reduce the risk of falls occurring, like 👇:

🚶‍♀️Whatever your age, aim to do at least 30 minutes of activity, 5 times a week to help make you stronger and improve your balance
🪑 Stand up slowly after you've been lying down or sitting to prevent posture-related dizziness
🔦 Good lighting around the house is important. Turn lights on when you walk around and leave hallway lights on at night
đźšż Use non-slip mats in wet zones, such as the shower and bathroom. Place non-skid tape on the edges of steps and stairs to make it easier to see. Remove moss, slime or fallen leaves from outdoor paths
🔌 Keep walkways clear of clutter, and tape down any electrical cords along skirting boards. Mark any small changes in floor level with contrasting colour so they’re clearly seen.

Paraffin wax baths are a type of heat treatment to help with pain and increased movement. They are very effective for arthritis and also help to soften scar tissue. They maintain heat and heat deeper than warm water or a hot pack. The wax baths are between 47 degrees Celcius and 51 degrees.

Always wash your hands first. Then place your hand in the melted wax 4-5 times and place it in a plastic bag and wrap your hand in a towel to keep the heat sealed.

Do you have wrist pain? Does your wrist give way or click in certain positions. Do you have pain weight bearing on your wrist at work, at the gym, or when you are on the floor playing with your children?

Wrists are complex and the cornerstone of the hand. If you do not have a stable, functional wrist then you do not have a fully functional hand.

This brace is called a wrist widget. It is a specific support for your wrist especially for weight-bearing and gripping.

If you have wrist pain. Consult your nearest certified hand therapist for an assessment of your wrist
