Have you ever wondered why some pyrite is formed in cubes and others are in clusters? I did as I was putting out some new pyrite cubes.

This is the answer:

The different shapes of pyrite (also called “fool’s gold”) come down to how it forms in nature — mainly the conditions in the surrounding environment as the crystals grow.

✨1. Cubic Pyrite

Cubic pyrite grows when the space and temperature are stable, and growth is slow and even.
Each crystal face has time to develop evenly, so the atoms stack into the most balanced (and energetically efficient) shape — a cube.

🌿 2. Clustered Pyrite

When the growth conditions are faster, more chaotic, or space is limited, pyrite crystals start to grow into each other, forming clusters or radiating groups instead of neat cubes.

✨ In short:
• Cubic pyrite = slow, steady growth in open space.
• Clustered pyrite = rapid growth or limited space.
Both are 100% natural pyrite — just formed under different geological conditions.
