I don't know about you, but when someone tells me to calm down when I'm feeling angry, frustrated or sad, it really doesn't help.
So when I catch myself saying it to my children I try to remember this.
Instead, show them empathy, love and understanding: "I would feel frustrated by that too", "I can see how sad that made you feel", "I get why you feel angry about that".
Just like adults, some children are morning people and others aren't. Chances are they take after one of their parents with this (I'm not a morning person!)
Here are some tips on how we can help them if (like me) they're just not a morning person.
They will do anything to get that connection, whether it is through "good" or "bad" choices.
Children want to be understood, accepted and loved for who they are.
When they're seeking that connection through difficult behaviour it can be much harder to remember this.
Once you are both calm take a moment to look them in the eyes and truly listen to them with your whole being.
Show them how it feels to be fully connected to and accepted by you: the good, the bad and the difficult parts of them too.
When we show them that we accept and are not afraid of or rejecting any part of them, they will begin to find it easier to accept and manage more difficult emotions themselves.
We know many parents out there are keen to do this program, but are struggling to access it due to difficulty getting to where the program is delivered or the cost is too high.
To help with both those factors, we are offering this program for $50 per session, ONLINE!
Isn't it funny how if we see a scared animal being rescued that is trying to bite and scratch out of fear to protect themselves we respond with love, tenderness and understanding.
Next time your child shows fear and anxiety through anti social behaviours, try to show them love, tenderness and understanding to help them learn to reduce the fear and anxiety that is the root cause of their behaviour.

Ocean Grace - Parenting, Behaviour and Relationship Counselling
We all would like to parent in a way that is true to our values and beliefs, but sometimes we can get caught up in the crazy, busy life of raising children today. There are so many different opinions and information out there on what you should and shouldn’t be doing to raise your children or to have a successful marriage and family life, it can be hard to know which way to turn.
Through our services we aim to support parents, teachers, carers and families to bring their focus back to the most important part of life: relationships. Whether it is your relationship with your child, partner, parents or relatives we can support you to get back to what you value most in your life and to understand the blocks and emotional triggers that are holding you back.
We offer:
Individual counselling for adults and children
Relationship and family counselling
Parenting programs for individuals, couples and groups
Information sessions for schools, groups and professionals
Training for teachers, carers and other professionals
Ocean Grace was founded by Michelle Bowyer and named after her families love of living near the ocean and its calming effect on their children, and after her daughter Grace whom she lost during her 5th month of pregnancy. Ocean Grace is her daughters legacy that teaches us to cherish our children, overcome our fears and follow our dreams.
