What a privilege to present today for Cecchetti Victoria at their Teacher’s refresher day at fabulous VCASS studios.
Alongside my fabulous partner in crime, Anne Butler, I had the joy of sharing The Eyes Have It! A conversation piece rather than a lecture, inviting teachers to pause, reflect, and really consider the stories our eyes tell.
We spoke about the eyes as a visual microphone, capable of expressing emotion, intention and story at different volume levels. Eyes are not just performance tools, but vital contributors to focus, gaze, awareness, balance and connection in dance.
The room was alive with curiosity, generosity and insight. The teachers were incredible, the discussion flowed, and our two beautiful students helped bring the ideas to life in the most honest way.
I closed with the following excerpt from Indian classical dance scripture — the heart of it all:
Where the hand is, the eyes follow.
Where the eyes go, the mind follows.
Where the mind is, there is the feeling.
Where the feeling is, there is mood.
So I left the room with this question:
If the eyes lead the mind, and the mind leads feeling, where do I want my eyes to go, and what stories do I want them to tell?
A huge thank you to Cecchetti Victoria for the invitation and the warmth of today, and to Anne for sharing this journey with me.
Here’s to taking the blinkers off!
