๐ŸŒผ๐Ÿฃ Happy Easter from BCD ๐Ÿฃ๐ŸŒผ

Easter is a gentle reminder of new beginnings, hope, and the simple joys that bring us together. Whether today is filled with chocolate eggs, time with loved ones, or a quiet moment of reflection, we hope it brings you comfort and warmth.

We recently spent time with our Customer Committee reflecting on what matters most in care and where we can do better. These conversations always ground us. They remind us that good care isnโ€™t just about services, itโ€™s about people, trust, and feeling heard.

Here are our top three takeaways:
โœจ Communication matters more than we think
Small changes can have a big impact. Keeping people informed builds trust and reduces stress.

๐Ÿค Care should feel personal, not transactional
From how tasks are done to how staff show up, customers want support that reflects their preferences, routines, and individuality.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Feedback is a gift
Whether itโ€™s a compliment or a suggestion, every piece of feedback helps us learn, improve, and do better.

Importantly, these insights donโ€™t sit in isolation, they directly inform our continuous improvement approach, shaping how we design, deliver, and evolve our services in a measurable way.

Weโ€™re grateful to our Customer Committee for sharing their experiences so openly. Itโ€™s through listening that we continue to grow and strengthen the way we support people at home.

Planning for what you want when you pass should happen when you donโ€™t need it.
Itโ€™s not an easy conversation, but itโ€™s an important one.

Advance care planning is about more than documents. Itโ€™s about making sure your values, preferences and voice are understood and respected, even if you canโ€™t speak for yourself.

For families, it can reduce stress and uncertainty during difficult moments. For care teams, it provides clarity and direction. And for individuals, it offers reassurance that future care reflects what matters most.

At BCD, we see the impact of these conversations every day, not just at end of life, but in supporting people to live well, with dignity, choice and control.

If itโ€™s something youโ€™ve been putting off, consider this your gentle prompt. The best time to plan is before you need to.

For many people, there is a deep comfort in being able to spend their final days in the place that feels most like home.

At BCD, we know the end of life is a deeply personal time for people and the families who love them. Through our participation in the End of Life Directions for Aged Care (ELDAC) Linkages Program, weโ€™re continuing to strengthen how we support people to feel comfortable, respected and cared for during this important stage of end of life.

If youโ€™re exploring Supported Independent Living (SIL) for yourself or someone you love, you might be wonderingโ€ฆ what does good support actually look like?

โ˜๐ŸผFrom the families and customers we support, hereโ€™s the top 5 things weโ€™ve learnt that works:

๐Ÿ’› Feeling heard โ€“ Taking time to understand personal preferences, routines and what feels comfortable.
๐Ÿก Respecting routines โ€“ Honouring meal times, sleep schedules and cultural traditions.
๐Ÿ’ฌ Clear communication โ€“ Explaining things in a way that makes sense and organising interpreters if needed.
๐ŸŒฑ Building independence โ€“ Supporting small, achievable steps like cooking, catching transport or learning new daily skills.
๐Ÿค Working with families โ€“ Keeping loved ones informed and valuing their input.

SIL should feel like home, safe, supportive and centred around the person.

Exploring SIL isnโ€™t a solo conversation, itโ€™s a shared one ๐Ÿค
At BCD, we know that exploring Supported Independent Living (SIL) is rarely a one-person decision. Itโ€™s a conversation with the participant and their entire village of care.

Family members. Carers. Support coordinators. Advocates.

Because when someone considers moving into a SIL home, the impact doesnโ€™t just affect them. It ripples outward bringing change, growth, reassurance, and sometimes understandable uncertainty for everyone involved.

If youโ€™re starting to explore SIL and want guidance designed for families and support networks, weโ€™ve created a practical resource to help:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Read our Family Guide to SIL Homes here:
https://www.bcd.org.au/news/sil-homes-family-guide

The strongest SIL outcomes happen when we:
โœ”๏ธ Listen to the participantโ€™s goals and preferences
โœ”๏ธ Engage families and carers openly
โœ”๏ธ Collaborate with the broader support network
โœ”๏ธ Plan thoughtfully, with transparency and trust

Independence doesnโ€™t mean doing life alone. It means having the right supports in place and a community walking alongside you.

๐Ÿกโœจ NDIS Home & Living โ€“ Whatโ€™s right for you?

Choosing the right home and living supports under your NDIS plan can feel confusing, but it doesnโ€™t have to be. At BCD, we support participants and carers to understand options like:
๐Ÿ  SIL โ€“ daily support to help you live more independently
๐Ÿ›๏ธ STR (Respite) โ€“ short stays to recharge and give carers a break
๐Ÿก SDA โ€“ specialist housing for higher support needs
๐Ÿค ILO โ€“ flexible supports designed around you

You donโ€™t have to figure it out alone. Weโ€™re here to help every step of the way ๐Ÿ’ฌ

These values guide everything we do at BCD and shape the way we support and uplift our community.

As we move into the festive season, weโ€™re feeling grateful for the people around us, our customers, families, community partners and team.
