Cervical Cancer Awareness Month is a reminder that cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, and Australia is leading the way in making its elimination possible.

The National Strategy for the Elimination of Cervical Cancer aims to eliminate this disease by 2035. Prevention is central to achieving this goal, and the combination of the HPV vaccination and the National Cervical Screening Program is key.

HPV vaccination protects against the virus responsible for most cervical cancers, while cervical screening detects HPV early, before cancer develops. Together, these measures provide the strongest defence. Vaccination does not eliminate the need for regular screening, as early-stage cervical cancer rarely causes symptoms.

Dr Robyn Sayer, COBL Gynaecological Oncologist, notes; โ€œAustralia is leading the way to eliminating cervical cancer in our lifetime! We are all essential in achieving this historic medical victory โ€“ HPV vaccination, cervical screening and advocating to improve access to all Australians.โ€

This month is an opportunity to raise awareness and encourage action. Booking a Cervical Screening Test, talking to a GP about the HPV vaccine, or supporting someone to do the same are small steps that can make a life-saving difference.

With both vaccination and screening, prevention works, early detection saves lives, and together, Australia can achieve the bold target of eliminating cervical cancer by 2035.

Access to innovative medicines can be the difference between hope and hardship for people with cancer.

An ABC News article highlights the impact of vorasidenib, a targeted therapy offering new promise for people with IDH-mutant astrocytoma, and the challenges patients face when access is limited.

Sienna was in Year 12 when she found out she had a 3.6-centimetre astrocytoma tumour on her brain, including on one of her optic nerves. Following surgery, Associate Professor Hao-Wen Sim, Chris O'Brien Lifehouse Medical Oncologist, recommended vorasidenib as a treatment option for Sienna to help control residual tumour growth.

Vorasidenib is the first treatment in more than 30 years to target a broad group of IDH-mutant brain cancers, with the crucial ability to cross the bloodโ€“brain barrier, something earlier therapies were unable to do effectively.

As A/Prof Sim has explained, this unique mechanism is โ€œwhy we have high hopes for this particular drug" and its potential to change outcomes for patients who previously had few alternatives beyond monitoring, chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Despite the high unmet clinical need, vorasidenib is not yet listed on the PBS, leaving families to absorb significant personal costs and limiting equitable access to care.

Reducing the burden of cancer means ensuring innovative, evidence-based treatments are accessible to all patients.

A new clinical trial is underway to improve outcomes for people with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), Australiaโ€™s second most common skin cancer. The study is exploring whether immunotherapy, a treatment that helps the bodyโ€™s own immune system recognise and attack cancer cells, can play a greater role in treating this disease.

With involvement from Chris Oโ€™Brien Lifehouse clinicians, including Professor Sydney Ch'ng, the trial is investigating whether giving immunotherapy before surgery can reduce the risk of the cancer returning and limit the need for extensive, life-altering procedures.

The study will enrol more than 420 patients across Australia, the United States and Canada, marking a significant international effort to advance SCC treatment.

This 9 News segment features patient COBL Arnold, who took part in an earlier immunotherapy trial and was able to avoid radical surgery. His experience offers insights into the potential impact this approach may have for future patients.

Advances in research and innovation play a key role in improving outcomes and enabling more personalised, patient-centred care.

Congratulations to Dr Laura Sunderland, Gynaecological Oncology Registrar, on receiving the 2025 David Church Memorial Award for Bedside Teaching, an honour nominated by medical students at the University of Sydneyโ€™s Central Clinical School.

โ€œItโ€™s honestly very humbling. Sharing knowledge is such an important part of the medical community, so to be recognised for that means a lot.โ€

For Dr Sunderland, bedside teaching goes beyond clinical facts. Itโ€™s about learning how to listen to patients, communicate with care, and explain complex information in ways that make sense.

Those moments when everything โ€œclicksโ€ for students are what make teaching so rewarding, and this award is a reflection of the impact she continues to have in the clinical setting.

Your cancer centre

Chris Oโ€™Brien Lifehouse is a not-for-profit, comprehensive cancer hospital. From screening to prevention, diagnosis, treatment and wellness, we specialise in advanced care for patients with cancer, including the most rare and complex cases. Each year we treat over 57,000 patients from across Australia, using the latest technology in a modern, purpose-built hospital.

Chris Oโ€™Brien

Chris Oโ€™Brien was a man of leadership, vision and courage. He inspired people, both through his work as a cancer specialist and through his own three-year battle with an aggressive brain tumour. Chris transformed his personal adversity into a national opportunity, using his experience to fight so much harder for cancer patients and their families. Chrisโ€™ vision was for an integrated cancer treatment centre, where patients will no longer have to navigate their way through all the different elements of dealing with their illness alone. His vision was realised with the opening of Chris Oโ€™Brien Lifehouse to patients on 19 November 2013.
