The job of antioxidants is to fight off unstable molecules that can cause harm in our body. Think of antioxidants as your internal clean-up crew—stopping damage before it wreaks havoc. And the good news? You don’t need a supplement drawer that looks like a science lab.

Top Foods High in Antioxidants:
– Blueberries (tiny but mighty)
– Dark chocolate (yes, really—science says so 😏)
– Pecans (fancy nuts with a purpose)
– Dark leafy greens (basically leafy superheroes)
– Green tea (calm and powerful, like a zen ninja)
– Red kidney beans (they sound boring, but they’re low-key legends)

Pro tip: Eating the rainbow isn’t just for toddlers. The more colorful your plate, the more antioxidants you’re likely getting.
So next time you eat blueberries and dark chocolate together, just tell people you’re “doing a deep detox.”

Gut health is a topic I frequently discuss with my clients. It’s a complex, interconnected system—kind of like one of those old-school Venn diagrams we used to see in school! When dietitians talk about a “healthy gut,” we’re usually referring to one with a diverse microbiome, made up of many different species of bacteria and even viruses. Some of these microbes are more beneficial than others. I like to think of the helpful ones as our little pets—they need to be fed and cared for and we do this by eating a variety of fibres. The more diverse our diet, the more types of fibre we consume, and in turn, the more diverse and resilient our microbiome becomes. The other way we care for our gut health is the way we eat and our behaviours around food.

I love working with the women of Karinya House developing both their nutrition knowledge and cooking skills. Their “feed the love” group sessions are a joy. Karinya House support pregnant and parenting women and their families who are in crisis. Such a great charity worthy of supporting 💕

Recently one of the casework team visited a woman being supported in an outreach capacity. The woman had recently attended one of the new “Feed the Love” sessions as part of the revamped Karinya “Little Steps” Group Program, which is supported with the gifted services of Stacy Morgan, Hive Nutrition.
The woman said, “I loved group so much, I even went out and bought some spices for the first time and cooked myself a meal from scratch. Nichola and Stacy were so lovely with me. I can't wait until next week.”
We are so glad "Group" is back on track at Karinya after the imposed hiatus. Time taken to renew and recreate the new "Little Steps" Group Program. Other components will be coming on line (safely) soon!
Image below is from Hive Nutrition as part of a great post (used with permission) and has some great text with it - maybe go and check it out. We too at Karinya know the importance of those first 1,000 days both at the time.. and also the impacts later in life..

PLANT-BASED DIETS AND CHRONIC DISEASE || Following a plant-based diet doesn't necessarily mean following a strict vegetarian or vegan diet and avoiding all foods that come from animals such as meat, eggs and dairy.

A whole-food, plant-based diet is simply a diet rich in foods that come from plants such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole-grain breads and cereals, nuts, and seeds. Plant-based diets can still contain smaller amounts of lean meat, eggs, seafood and dairy products if people choose.

One of the most important benefits of following a plant-based diet is that they help protect against many of the chronic lifestyle diseases and health concerns that we face today.

Eating a diet containing more foods that are plant-based has been shown to reduce the risk of:
- Early death
- Some types of cancers including bowel cancer
- High cholesterol
- High blood pressure
- Stroke
- Heart disease
- Type two diabetes
- Obesity
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

Many of my clients already enjoy eating this way and may just need a little inspiration with new recipes that are quick and easy in proportions that meet their individual needs. If this sounds like you then reach out to Hive Nutrition
