Aiming to be the best optometrist or optical dispenser in Canberra City isn't just lip-service or an ambitious goal - it's making sure we attend the lectures and courses to update our skills to deliver the best eye test and service to our clients - it’s investing in the cutting edge instruments to find the earliest signs of eye disease - it’s the never-ending search for the best glasses by handpicking frames from optical tradeshows and local suppliers. It's the complete package that counts - and we believe that's what's allowed us to grow into one of the largest independent optometry practices in Canberra, expanding recently into new premises in the busiest part of the city.

Here's what to look out for if you suspect your child is shortsighted:

1. Squinting: Children with myopia often squint to try and see objects at a distance more clearly.

2. Difficulty seeing distant objects: They may have trouble seeing things that are far away, such as the blackboard in school or signs on the road.

3. Frequent headaches: Straining the eyes to see clearly can lead to headaches, especially after activities that require focusing on distant objects.

4. Eye fatigue: The eyes may feel tired or strained after prolonged periods of reading, writing, or doing other close-up work.

5. Sitting close to the TV or holding books close to the face: Children with myopia may exhibit a preference for sitting or standing very close to the television or holding books, mobile phones and other materials close to their face to see clearly.

6. Difficulty in school: Myopia can affect a child's performance in the classroom, as they may struggle to see what the teacher is writing on the board or may have difficulty reading text from a distance.

7. Rubbing the eyes: Children with myopia may rub their eyes frequently, especially when they are experiencing eye strain or fatigue.

If you suspect that your child may have myopia or if they are displaying any of these symptoms, it is important to consult an eye care professional for a comprehensive eye examination. They can provide an accurate diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment options if necessary.

Clear Vision Matters:
Understanding Myopia in Children and How to Prevent It

Myopia, commonly known as near-sightedness, is a prevalent eye condition affecting children at an alarming rate in today's society. As the world becomes more digitised and children spend an increasing amount of time engaged in near activities like studying, playing video games, or using electronic devices, the incidence of myopia continues to rise. This article aims to shed light on the causes, consequences, and preventive measures for myopia in children, emphasising the importance of early intervention and lifestyle modifications.

What is Myopia?

Myopia is a refractive error that causes distant objects to appear blurry while close objects remain clear. It usually occurs when the eye is too long or the cornea is too curved, resulting in the image forming in front of the retina instead of directly on it. While genetics play a significant role in myopia development, environmental factors also contribute to its prevalence among children.
