Next Practice Deakin – Psychological Safety Day 2025
Today is Psychological Safety Day—a global reminder of how important it is to create spaces where people feel comfortable to speak up, share ideas, ask questions, and express concerns without fear or judgement. In healthcare, this kind of environment is essential. It helps teams learn, supports wellbeing, and ultimately strengthens the care we provide to our community.
At Next Practice Deakin, psychological safety sits at the heart of how we work. As a teaching practice and a learning health system, we know that the quality and compassion of our care grows from a team culture where people feel safe to be honest, curious, and open.
Psychological Safety Day invites us to reflect on the things that matter most in how we work together. For us, this means:
• We lead with shared purpose. Every member of our team—clinical and non-clinical—comes together with a commitment to make a positive difference to the lives of our patients and communities. That shared purpose guides our decisions, shapes our culture, and keeps us grounded in what matters.
• We embrace learning. We see mistakes, near-misses, and challenges as opportunities to learn and improve. Our learning health system is built on reflection, openness, and continuous improvement.
During our most recent accreditation visit, this approach was recognised as a key strength—affirming how psychological safety helps us grow and deliver better care.
• We foster safe conversations. Our simple team norms—assuming positive intent, listening deeply, inviting every voice, and responding with kindness—help us show up for each other and for our patients, every day.
• We care for the humans caring for others. When our team feels safe and supported, they can be their best selves for our patients. Psychological safety helps reduce burnout, strengthens teamwork, and contributes to a brighter, more connected healthcare experience.
As we recognise Psychological Safety Day, we’re reminded that caring well for our community begins with caring well for each other. When our team feels safe, supported, and able to speak openly, we create a space where patients feel the same. Together, we build a practice that is welcoming, compassionate, and genuinely here for the people we serve.
