🚨 Japanese Encephalitis Virus & Horses 🚨

Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV) is a is a viral zoonotic disease that is spread by mosquitoes that affects animals and humans. Outbreaks of JEV have been reported in piggeries in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia.

In horses, many cases are subclinical, meaning they are infected but show no signs of disease. Most clinical disease is mild, however more severe encephalitis can occur which may be fatal. Symptoms of JEV in horses may include:
🔴 Elevated temperature
🔴 Jaundice
🔴 Lethargy
🔴 Anorexia
🔴 Neurological signs - incoordination, difficulty swallowing, impaired vision, and rarely the horse becomes over excited.

⚠️ Prevention may include regularly applying insect repellents, fly mask, rugging and stabling horses during periods when mosquitoes are active.

🚨 Horse owners need to be alert to signs of this disease. Japanese encephalitis is a nationally notifiable disease which means it must be reported to a veterinarian or biosecurity authority. To report, call the national Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline on 1800 675 888. This number will put you in contact with the biosecurity authority in your state or territory.

"Riders sometimes need to realize that horses need soothing, cuddling and comforting. Sometimes that isn't too bad for people either. They can use that a little bit too." ~ Tom Dorrance

A very disheartening, angering, and simply awful video has emerged of Sir Mark Todd, New Zealand former Olympian and (previously) highly regarded Equestrian, whipping a client’s(?) horse repeatedly in order to scare them through a water jump.

This type of behaviour is outdated.
This type of behaviour is apalling.
This type of behaviour is degrading.
This type of behaviour is damaging.
This type of behaviour is weak.
This type of behaviour is uneducated.
This type of behaviour is narcissistic.
This type of behaviour is abuse.
This type of behaviour needs to be addressed.

The thinking and training surrounding involvement with horses is changing dramatically as people become more educated about equine welfare. We can only hope that those who resist education get lost in the midst as more humane, considerate and effective training techniques become the norm.

I’m sharing this video for awareness; to begin a discussion; to stand up for what I believe is wrong and what I believe is right.

Be their voice.

Disturbing footage has surfaced of former Olympic equestrian champion Sir Mark Todd repeatedly hitting a horse with a stick.

An interesting and, for some, challenging read. Regarding the correlation between horse welfare and rider safety: can we utilise tools to assist in reducing risk?

“An owner has direct control over the use of conflicting, harsh or ill-fitting equipment, their level of knowledge and skill in selecting and applying training practices and the frequency with which horses are exposed to stressful situations. Therefore, recognition, minimisation and/or remediation of these factors represents an opportunity for owners to improve not only their horse’s welfare but their own safety.”

Rethink your procedures.
Slow down your judgment.

What message are they trying to send?
You are their voice.
