We are a group of passionate advocates with a mission to raise awareness and support education on Breast Implant Illness (BII) and breast implant safety. We aim to work collaboratively with healthcare professionals, patients, regulators and health organisations to drive improvement in outcomes for patients and aid in decision-making related to breast implants.
Many of us in this community have experienced adverse outcomes related to breast implants and understand the effect this can have on health. We recognise that women have breast implants for different reasons, either reconstructive purposes or augmentation and we want to ensure patient safety and education is primary goal during this process.
We aim to keep up to date with research and new information relating to BII and encourage new long-term research focused on the safety of breast implants and the prevalence of BII. We are working to engage and support our community to understand challenges and issues surrounding Breast Implant Illness, including gathering experiences of women to better understand prevalence, which will contribute to our advocacy efforts.
· Diagnostic criteria for BII and clinical legitimisation of this illness through an International Classification of Disease (IDC) code;
· Further research into the long-term safety of breast implants and the prevalence of Breast Implant Illness;
· Mandatory reporting of adverse events by healthcare professionals and mandatory tracking and follow-up of patients post implant;
· The Australian Breast Device Registry (ABDR) to reinvigorate their follow-up survey so that it is aimed at patient safety and health,and
· Women to receive adequate information about the risks of implants so that decision-making about health is informed.
