Hopping is tricky! It takes balance, leg strength, coordination and to be brave!

The bravest kids don’t give up. They wobble, dam, try again, until they master it.

This is what physio is about, giving little ones the opportunities to try and to build their skills over time.

Today we are celebrating this little lion! We celebrate all his Brave attempts and his first hope! Amazing :)

Follow us to learn how you can help your little one with their next big skill (I promise my next reel will be 3 tips on how to master hopping!).

Teach this mini milestone before walking!

I often see parents focusing on walking — but pull to stand is a really important step before that happens.

Pull to stand helps your baby learn to:
• push through their legs
• shift weight forward and balance on their ankles (rather than their knees like crawling)

This strength and coordination is what walking is built on.

If you little one can’t quite walk try these first:
- pulling to stand with right leg and left leg (i.e. not just one leg)
- holding onto furniture and reaching
- sitting on your lap and then pulling up to standing (like squats)

Learning to Kick. Have you thought about all the mini milestones before your child can kick in a sport?

1. Can they stand on one leg for 3 seconds?
2. Can they kick by walking into the ball?
3. Can they kick by swinging their leg forward?
4. Can they kick by swinging their leg backwards?
5. NOW it’s time for kicking sports!

“How should I play with my 6–12 month old?”
This is one of the most common questions we get.
At this age, play is all about exploring.
Your baby is learning:
• what their body can do
• how objects move and feel
• cause and effect (if I do this something happens)

Exploratory play often looks very basic — and that’s exactly how it should be.
You might see your baby:
• staring at you closely
• reaching and grabbing
• mouthing toys (and everything else including hands and feet)

So how do you play with them?
Keep it simple:
• sing and talk to them throughout the day
• read books as they will like your voice
• offer objects that do something i.e. a wooden spoon and a pot as a drum or a ball that will roll away when pushed
• encourage movement — bells on wrists or ribbon on feet help them connect movement with sound
This kind of play builds body awareness, coordination and early motor skills — all through everyday moments.

This is a little physio secret we share with our families.

Squatting is one of the most important skills for learning to walk.

It builds the strength, balance and control little bodies need to stand up without help. That’s the building blocks before taking independent steps!

Also all our recommendations are games not exercises.

Kids learn best when they’re curious, moving, laughing and playing!

Save this post to try these 4 squatting games with your little lion cub!

As a paediatric physiotherapist these are 3 of my go-to tools in gross motor sessions for children aged 2–5:
1. Foot & hand markers – encourage precise foot placement, coordination, and spatial awareness.
2. Hurdles or stepping buckets – build balance, strength, and confidence while jumping, stepping, and climbing.
3. Our “secret weapon” – the rocket launcher – motivates running, hopping, and whole-body movement in a fun, game-like way.

These toys make therapy playful, purposeful, and help children develop strong foundations for movement and coordination.

How do you know if your child is struggling with balance?

Signs to watch for:
Frequent trips or falls
Difficulty with climbing or riding a bike
Slower running, hesitation, or avoiding new challenges
Extra head knocks or bruises

Common causes:
Weak leg or core muscles, posture, foot or leg alignment, vestibular or sensory difficulties, hypermobility, or coordination challenges.

Play-based support:
Struggling doesn’t always mean something is wrong, kids develop differently
Physiotherapists assess strength, flexibility, coordination, and skills to create fun, individualised programs
