We were honoured to attend the 2025 Poppy Ball aboard HMAS Canberra (III) on Saturday night.

It was an unforgettable evening celebrating our veterans and the vital work of RSL LifeCare, alongside inspiring stories of community, service, and commitment to those who've served our nation.

The Sunset Ceremony and veteran stories shared throughout the evening were deeply moving reminders of why this work matters. Together with the auction, the night raised funds to support veterans and their families.

Reflecting on Progress: The Broderick Report and Women in Defence Today

Thirteen years ago, Elizabeth Broderick’s Report into the Treatment of Women in the Australian Defence Force was tabled in Parliament. It was a significant moment that examined the experiences of women serving our nation.

The review found that despite progress over the previous two decades, there was insufficient confidence that women could flourish in all ADF workplaces (1). The report's recommendations focused on leadership accountability, increasing women's participation, and driving cultural reform.

Today, we can observe meaningful progress. Female representation in the ADF has grown from 14.4% in 2012 to 20.1% in 2021/2022 (2), and women now hold senior leadership positions across all services.

*Warning: The following contains discussion of sexual assault reporting*

However, work remains. Recent data shows sexual assault reports in the ADF reached 215 in 2025 (3), highlighting the continued need for support systems that serve those who come forward.

The Importance of Trauma-Informed Reporting

At Zed3 Medical Group, we understand that the method in which incidents of military sexual trauma are reported to other matters deeply.

Service members need:

▪️ Safe, confidential reporting pathways
▪️ Trauma-informed care that prioritises safety and avoids re-traumatisation
▪️ Support from appropriately trained professionals
▪️ Access to specialised medical and psychological care

As we recognise progress in 2025, we remain committed to supporting environments where every service member can serve with dignity and safety.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Today at 11am, we will pause for a minute’s silence to honour and remember the service and sacrifices made by service men and women.

Lest we forget.

We are proud to be attending the 2025 Australasian Military Medicine Association (AMMA) Conference in Adelaide.

The conference brings together medical and allied health professionals to discuss critical topics in military medicine, emerging technologies, and the future of healthcare delivery in defence settings.

Being here with our team enables us to listen and learn from leading experts in the field, gaining valuable insights that will directly enhance the care we provide.

It’s an excellent opportunity to connect with colleagues, share perspectives, and explore innovations that are shaping the future of military and veterans' health.

The knowledge exchange and professional connections made during our time here will continue to benefit our practice and the communities we serve.

Thank you to AMMA for hosting such a valuable event, and to Adelaide for being the perfect backdrop for this important gathering of military medical professionals.

We are aware that there is ongoing scrutiny of veterans’ healthcare and report providers.

Please be assured that our services remain fully operational.

Tell Us: What do you want us to focus on in 2026?

Here at Zed3 Medical Group, we’re involved in research – both in Australia and internationally – because we believe the veteran community deserves evidence-based answers to complex questions.

Through our participation in research forums and clinical meetings, we have the opportunity to contribute to conversations that shape how veterans receive care.

Looking ahead to 2026, we want to make sure our research efforts focus on what matters most to the veteran community and the healthcare providers working alongside them.

We invite your input on our research priorities.

--

🔹 Clinical Conditions: What do you want to know about Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), complex trauma presentations, or emerging diagnostic considerations specific to military service?

🔹 Service Provision Models: How can we better understand PTSD clinic frameworks, psychedelic-assisted therapy programs, or integrated care approaches?

🔹 Military vs. Civilian PTSD: What questions do you have about the distinct characteristics, treatment responses, and clinical considerations that differentiate military-related PTSD from civilian presentations?

🔹 DVA Assessment Standards: What would make a truly effective DVA report?

🔹 Other priority areas: What else do you believe requires focused research attention?

--

Your input is invaluable in directing our research efforts where they can have the greatest impact.

Please share your thoughts in the comments or reach out directly. Together, we can ensure research serves those who have served.

Dear Veterans, Advocates and GPs,

This is a post of gratitude.

While my team and I are trained medical professionals, we're also a bunch of civvies – and it is our mission to support you with the healthcare you've earned and deserve. Although we're not veterans ourselves, we have been granted the opportunity to spend over a decade learning from you, and that education has been invaluable.

You've taught us that quality healthcare for veterans requires more than clinical expertise; it requires genuine respect for your service and experiences.

Thousands of veterans have entrusted us with their care, and that has shaped everything we do. This includes preventing us from becoming another self-licking ice cream that serves itself rather than those who need it most.

Our education comes from the lessons you teach us every day. Thank you for your trust in helping us to understand how to serve you better. We remain committed to earning that trust, one veteran at a time.

With respect,

Dear Veterans, GPs and Advocates,

We understand that recent weeks have brought uncertainty across the DVA claims sector.

Our team of mental health clinicians are here and ready to help veterans access the support and compensation they’ve earned through their service.

With care,

World Su***de Prevention Day and R U OK? Day

Today and tomorrow are two important dates to pause and reflect on better mental health.

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day. This year’s theme is ‘Changing the Narrative’. It’s a call to shift from silence and stigma to openness, empathy, and action, to ensure those who are struggling feel heard, supported, and connected.

Tomorrow is R U OK? Day. It’s a day to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with people around them. It’s a reminder that a simple question can make all the difference.

--

Four simple steps to make a difference to someone in your life:

Ask - "Are you okay?" and mean it
Listen - Give them your full attention
Encourage action - Help them find the right support
Check in - Follow up and stay connected

Whether it's talking to a trusted friend, family member, or healthcare professional, support is available.
