One of the most common yet overlooked causes of lower back pain is a tight iliopsoas, also known as the hip flexor muscle. This deep muscle connects your lower spine (lumbar vertebrae) to your femur (thigh bone) — meaning it directly links your spine to your legs.

When you sit for long periods or move less, the hip flexor becomes shortened and overactive. This creates a forward pull on the pelvis (called anterior pelvic tilt), increasing tension in the lumbar spine and leading to pain, stiffness, or even nerve irritation.

Studies show that chronic sitting and hip flexor tightness can alter the lumbopelvic rhythm — how your spine and pelvis move together — making your lower back muscles work harder to stabilize your trunk. Over time, this muscle imbalance can cause mechanical low back pain, one of the most common pain patterns seen in clinical practice.

🧘‍♂️ Try This Stretch (1–2x daily):

Kneeling Hip Flexor Stretch
- Kneel on one knee (like a lunge).
Keep your chest upright and gently tuck your pelvis under (avoid arching your back).
You should feel a deep stretch in the front of your hip and thigh.

Hold for 30–45 seconds per side and repeat 2–3 sets.

Pro Tip: Add a gentle overhead reach on the same side for a deeper stretch into the psoas.
