A couple of weeks ago, our aeromedical hangar in Karratha became a classroom unlike any other. A group of medical students joined Dr Tim Parker, Dr Nantha Ramachandran and Intensive Care Paramedic Scott Webster to learn what retrieval medicine really looks like.
From hands-on simulations to step-by-step breakdowns of in-flight emergencies, the session brought the realities of pre-hospital care to life. The students explored the aircraft, practiced critical procedures and saw how clinical decisions are made under pressure, with limited resources and no room for error.
For many, it was their first exposure to acute care beyond the hospital. The feedback spoke volumes. Several described the experience as a turning point in their career thinking, with a renewed interest in emergency and retrieval medicine.
Thank you to our clinical team for volunteering their time and expertise - experiences like these help shape the next generation of healthcare professionals.
