Yoga will be in the Woolman Room at the Friend's Meeting House this Thursday 24 May at 6:15pm. It's located on the Corner of Condamine and Bent St in Turner. We should be back at the Canberra Seniors Centre on 31 May, as the 3000 rubber bits for the floor have arrived and are currently being installed. I'll keep you informed.

For me, exercising outdoors is one of the best ways to destress and energise, and cycling or Nordic walking around the lake are my top choices for lifting my mood. Today I bumped into Kirsten Pratt (well, not quite literally) who got me started on the Nordic walking journey, which is a bit like cross country skiing without the snow or skis. I had great fun ‘’racing” at the Finnish Embassy’s inaugural World Nordic Walking Day on Saturday (well – I completed the race course, but I did loiter at the back socialising). I'd just been feeling a bit anxious that morning but at the 5 km mark I clicked over into feeling great. Dancing with my music loud and my disco lights bright is another way I shake the blues, and I used to love kayaking and rowing – there’s something meditative about the repeated actions. How do you move to feel positive?

Henny was a yoga regular for years until a stroke in January at 83 years of age put her out of action by causing aphasia (mixing up language) and some dementia. Frances and I visited her yesterday, and she was very happy to see us (and loved the chocolates). Her speech was better than I expected and she was doing an exercise class which brought back memories. Henny seems very happy and her husband Peter is so loving and caring - may we all be so treasured.

Want to learn yoga which may help with insomnia, anxiety or MS?
As part of the Dru Yoga Therapy Diploma, Dru Australia is offering an opportunity for volunteers to become a DYTh client in one of three Group Case Studies. This could be either yourselves, your friends or family members who would appreciate the opportunity to be part of a 6-week case study and who have insomnia, MS or anxiety.
Please contact:
mouli@druworldwide.com for insomnia, 0405 430 065, starting at the end of April through to June
ruth@dru.com.au for MS, 0401 288 921, starting a group case study in August
alina@dru.com.au for anxiety, 0403 435 690. Dates to be confirmed once expressions of interest are received.
What’s involved?
As part of the case study a pre-assessment health questionnaire will be emailed to you to be completed and returned before attending a 1 hour personal assessment. This will be followed by 5 consecutive weekly group case study sessions with a group of 4–6 people with the same condition. We ask you to commit approx 15–30 mins a day working with the DYTh practices during this time.

Exercise and meditation are a magic combination. I was feeling a bit edgy yesterday morning and then went out on my first big walk after my knee replacement surgery. I just love Nordic walking – low impact aerobic walking out in nature, using most of your muscles and promoting good posture. I followed up with a meditation and felt so much better……and it’s not just me. Check out this article showing how exercise combined with meditation is great for reducing symptoms of depression. Interestingly the researchers had participants do the aerobic exercise after meditation, whereas I usually exercise first - but that could prevent the ‘meditations’ becoming....well.....collapsings, or snoozings.

I'm looking forward to teaching again this Thursday. However we will be in the Woolman Room at The Friends Meeting House, corner of Condamine and Bent St Turner, for 12 and 19 April as the floor of the Canberra Seniors Centre is still being repaired. I won't have my bags of blankets and mats, so contact me if you need me to bring any.

I'm well on my way to healing after knee replacement surgery in February. 2018 has definitely been an eventful year and I now have an intimate understanding of surgery and joint pain. I've found lots of practices really helpful - particularly breathing techniques, mudras, relaxations and meditations. Can't wait to get back to teaching!

I'm ready to return to teaching, but the Canberra Senior's Centre Hall still has no floor, so there will be no yoga this Thursday evening 5 April (floating elephants excepted).
