Winning Position Bike fitter, remedial and sports massage therapist based in North Canberra, Australia

Hi I'm Vicki and I have over 20 years’ experience as an Exercise Physiologist, Soft Tissue Therapist and Pilates instructor. I have been a remedial massage therapist for the Australian and AIS (Australian Institute of sports) working with elite athletes including the Australian rowing, swimming and basketball teams and provided soft tissue services to the Australian Rowing team at the 2004 Athens Games. I am also a Level 2 cycling coach and have experience as the Associate Cycling Coach with the ACT Academy of Sport, particularly focused on talent identification of road cyclists. Rounding out my experience I have also been an elite athlete, holding an AIS cycling scholarship in 2008 and then riding as a professional cyclist for the Vision 1 and Lotto Belisol teams in 2009-2011 and representing Australia at four consecutive UCI Road World Championships in both the Road Race and Time Trial disciplines as well as the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. My interest in bike fitting was first sparked by the bike fits and aerodynamic wind tunnel testing that I experienced as a professional athlete and have first hand experience of how important a good fit is to achieving performance and comfort on the bike. My qualifications and experience in Remedial Massage, Exercise Physiology and cycle coaching means that I am adept at assessing and and addressing injuries caused by a poor bicycle fit or due to movement patterns and daily activities that occur off the bike. Vicki also has qualifications specific to bike fitting, holding a bike fitting certification from F.I.S.T, the Fit Institute, SlowTwitch, which is run by Dan Empfield, the Publisher of Slowtwitch.com. At Winning Position, I aim to prescribe comfortable, injury free cycling positions that maximise performance. It is a process that involves addressing an individual’s biomechanics, the bike and the interaction between the two. I love helping cyclists from all disciplines whether they are looking to beat the world, ride around the block in comfort or anything in between. As a remedial massage therapist of 25 years I help people of all ages from all walks of life and have particular interest in individuals who like to be physically active and have goals for optimal health that is sustainable and maximises their health span- those years lived without chronic disease and conditions. I use a combination of hands-on/manual techniques such as trigger point therapy, myofascial release and PNF to address painful and dysfunctional soft tissue areas. As an adjunct I prescribe practical and do-able home strategies to get my clients back to moving and doing what they love.

* As e-bike adoption grows, a bike fit is crucial for comfort and performance, especially since ebikes can be heavier and faster than traditional bikes, potentially exacerbating fit issues.

A correct fit ensures the rider is more comfortable, making it more likely they will continue to ride, which is especially important for new e-bike users.

By improving your pedaling efficiency, riders can get the most out of a motor's assistance

Proper saddle height and position are critical for balance and control, not to mention issues with saddle discomfort.

Bike fitting isn't just for the procyclists. It's for those that are forgoing their cars, breathing the fresh air and commuting to work, study and play.

Much as I wish it were otherwise, a bike fit cannot instantly solve every injury or cause of discomfort that a cyclist might suffer in the course of their cycling journey. Don’t get me wrong, there is a huge array of problems that a bike fit can fix.

However, unless you address compensation patterns in the body, a riders position on their bike can remain suboptimal.

With 28 years of Exercise Physiology and soft tissue therapy experience, I am qualified to address both!

Bicycle crank length has been a pretty hot topic of late. Here's my latest thoughts...

Crank length does matter Back in 2018 , I wrote an article about bicycle crank length. Recently I’ve been reading and hearing in various places that crank length doesn’t actually matter. For example, the latest Zwift bike comes with one crank length (172.5mm). The argument is that 172.5 is an av...

As the days and especially the mornings get cooler in Canberra, many cyclists retreat to the indoor trainer.

Many hard core, mountain bike riders escape to the warmth of the trees!

Indoor cycling often requires a more static and consistent body position compared to outdoor riding, where adjustments are made based on terrain and conditions.

Less variation in your cycling positions may lead to discomfort, fatigue and increased risk of injuries as specific muscles are loaded differently and constantly.

Having your cycling position assessed for your indoor trainer with a professional bike fit can increase your power output and efficiency so that a solid winter training schedule can be achieved, ready for the Spring!

Check out the various bike fit services:
comprehensive bike fit sessions, saddle optimisation, foot pedal interface assessments as well as remedial massage and strength and conditioning programs.

You do not have to be a performance cyclist to benefit from a bike fit. Many clients are commuters, riding for fun and fitness on the weekends, planning and preparing for their Euro vacation and would like to get more comfortable. :)

In the bike fitting business, I find many clients have been through a huge variety of saddles before they land on their one of comfort. This can cost time and dollars.

Firstly, you need to establish the correct position of the saddle on your bike before deciding that saddle is to be discounted.

A bike fit at Winning Position caters for a through investigation of the saddle type shape, contours, cut outs that will better inform your decision. It contains a lot more than simply measuring your sit bone width!

Whilst I might not have the saddle for you, it will certainly eliminate the saddles that you are clearly not suited to!

"I’m not a professional cyclist so I shouldn’t get a bike fit."

You’re not a professional TV watcher either , but you choose comfort over discomfort!

You might not spend a lot of time on the bike like a pro cyclist, but why wouldn't you choose to be comfortable? :)

Bike fits should be individualised.

🚲 A fitting session typically takes 3-3.5hrs.I have tried to trim it down but couldn't come at it. It would mean missing valuable information and conversation with the individual about their goals and problems they are facing.

🛞The quicker bike fits can work if you have a formula and apply it to a group (an average) but with my philosophy, the bike needs to fit the person during a process that we find together.

🤷‍♀️The whole cycling industry deals with a bell shaped curve of human morphology. They build bikes to fit 89% of the market- and they work to manufacture as fewer carbon models as possible.

👎If you are short (or really tall !) or have an atypical torso to legs relationship, you're out of luck because the bike equipment deals with normal curves and standard deviations.

👉You don't need to give up in despair or fork out cash for an expensive custom build. It is realising that the formula and angle measurements are not necessarily going to work.

⌚️The downside is that my fit sessions take a bit of time!

😉The other thing you won't find, is that if you look at a rider I've fitted, you probably won't know who they got the bike fit from. One rider might come out really upright and for others I'm scared their nose will scrape the ground.

My signature is that I have no signature. 😁

👀Change is not always necessary.......

Some clients come for a full bike fit and we only do a few tweaks to their bike equipment. This is because I'm not going to change something just because I feel I need to change something.

Change for the sake of change could mean a worse position. Just because equipment changes haven't occurred doesn't mean there are not conversations around a person's physiology off the bike: their work lifestyle habits and behaviors that might need tweaking!

Cyclists are humans that come in all shapes and sizes, participating in various types of riding.

So of course there is no one bike fit for all.

* Cyclists come with their preferences. Some choose to ride "clipless"/cleated shoe set ups and others prefer flat pedals.

* There are pros and cons of each position. However, both set ups require an analysis within a bike fit session.
