Time for our next staff spotlight - Hannah! About two years ago, Hannah joined our team as an EP and has thrived since then.

When you think about hobbies that people have, you think people stay with one or two hobbies for months, if not years right? That’s not the case with Hannah; Hannah has said that she has a new hobby every week! But one thing that Hannah does everyday is go to the gym!

Now going to the gym everyday might seem pretty normal for some people, but something that makes Hannah stand out is her two pets. Hannah doesn’t have the types of pets that you normally see, like dogs and cats – She has two goats, Billy and Sophia!

We love having you on our team Hannah and look forward to a future giving our clients the opportunity to fulfill their goals!

Happy end of the week everyone!

Today we want to talk to you about one of the services we offer - Social Prescribing!

Social Prescribing is a way that our health professionals help people improve their wellbeing by connecting them to non-medical community supports. Through our social prescribing we look at the bigger picture - we focus on your social life, community involvement, and daily activities.

We understand that you could be feeling isolated, anxious, or struggling with daily life. To help you with that we might help connect you with joining a community group, art class, walking club, or even a peer support group for those that might be experiencing the same things you are. Our goal with this is to boost your mental and physical health by helping you build connections, learn new skills, and feel more supported.

You might ask yourself, why is it important?

In 2023 15% of Australians reported feeling lonely, stressed or lack of community support. Social prescribing fights to reduce these numbers by helping you feel more connected and empowered. If we can help you spend more time with your friends, social events or doing the things you enjoy, we are doing our job!

If you have any questions or want to learn more, contact us!

Athletics, what does it involve?
Running, throwing and jumping

Today we are going to focus on the third activity out of those three, jumping!
Jumping, what does it involve?
To jump you need to transfer weight from one or both your feet. One thing that most people don’t think about is that a jump can be divided into three parts: take-off, flight and landing.

If you are a beginner a great way to start is by doing step-ups, these are great for strengthening your lower body muscles to help you jump higher!
If you are doing them with ease, try doing sprinter step ups. Sprinter step-ups are a highly effective exercise for developing explosive leg power, which is crucial for sprinters and jumpers. So if you are wondering what you can do to get you running the 100 meters that second or two faster, give these a go!

Our next exercise is squat jumps which work on your explosive power too, as you are training your muscles to generate maximum force in minimal time. This is essential for that push off you need when jumping. For an easier variation these can be modified into regular squats until you can build up your strength and balance enough to add the jump.

Lastly, we have hopping!
Hopping is great for ankle stiffness, Achilles strength, calves and your quads and can greatly enhance your balance and coordination.

With all the tips we have given you today, we can’t wait to see you out there breaking all the jumping records!

One thing that is positive about moving forward is when you take a walk down memory lane. Our Elijah was able to do this last Tuesday when he was invited back to his old High School and College SFX, to speak to the 7-10 cohort.

Out of all the speeches that Elijah has made over the past 5 years, this one was Elijah’s most meaningful speech. As it was at SFX that Elijah learned some of the most valuable lessons in life.

In his speech Elijah talked about his life pre accident, post-accident and the importance of resilience, determination and strength. For this speech, there were approximately 1000 students and teachers in attendance. With every chair filled with people standing around the perimeter of the hall.

Congratulations on another great speech, Elijah!
We know that you will have a great future in this speaking business!

Happy end to the working week everyone!
As said by Steve Jobs, “The only way to do great work is to love what you do”

This quote brings us onto our next Staff Spotlight, a person who does great work day in and day out because she loves what she does, Deb!

Deb has been with us for 6 and a half years, and is one of our Senior Occupational Therapists, while being a team lead for ASD and Mental Health. Deb has a background in Mental Health, Disability and Pastoral Care. For 9 years, Deb was working with students in a P-10 public school.

Now everyone starts off with a job that usually doesn’t have that much in common with what they will do when they grow up. That wasn’t the case with Deb, since her first job as an English Tutor and babysitter, she has been helping people!

Spending years helping people can be a tiring life, but luckily Deb has activities that she can do to get her Zen. To relax, Deb will get a bowl of ice cream and start sewing, quilting, or reading. She will do this before it is time to call it a day and get some much-needed sleep, before doing it all again tomorrow.

Deb, we love having you on our team and look forward to a bright future together!

So what is an OT? As part of OT week, we want to tell you all about the amazing work they do!

Occupational Therapy, or OT, is a type of rehabilitation that enables people to maximise their capacity and independence so that they can participate in everyday activities that are meaningful to them such as personal care, domestic activities, travel, work, leisure, and more. OTs can assist those facing challenges due to health conditions, injuries, and disabilities.

Once they have assessed a person needs, they can then make recommendations to help support individuals to achieve their goals, improve their capacity and optimise independence.

Here at TRS our OTs can help with things such as assistive technology assessments and recommendations, individualised therapy programs, complex functional assessments, workplace-based assessments, supported independent living assessments, and more!

When you become an OT, you can help make the world a better place!

It’s OT Week!

OT Week is a celebration that happens every year to celebrate the extraordinary impact occupational therapists make every day. Each year, OT Week has a different theme, with this year’s theme being Occupational Therapy in Action. This theme invites us to highlight creativity, problem-solving, and compassion at the heart of OT practice.

Here at TRS, we are extremely grateful for all of the amazing Occupational Therapists we have on our team and have crossed paths with over the years. We love working with our clients and providing much needed support, but did you know there are many areas of OT? OTs work in aged care, mental health, paediatrics, disability care, hospital settings, rehabilitation and more! They help people improve their independence and quality of life, and who knows where we would be without them!

Thank you to all the amazing OTs out there!

How long do you work in a day? And how often are you taking a stretch break?

It is suggested that every 30-45 minutes, you take a couple minutes out of your day to perform some simple stretches. If you are constantly working in a hunched-over position at your desk, your bodies will get stiff over time so it is important to loosen up our upper body and stretch our legs. Taking breaks throughout your day can also enhance your concentration and improve your overall productivity.

Today we have some exercises for you that can be done right at your desk to give your body a little break and reset!

For your shoulders, interlock both hands behind your back, keeping your chest and head up. Then squeeze your shoulder blades together while moving the arms back, do this until you feel a stretch.

Now for your neck, there are a few things you can do, you can slowly turn your head to look over your shoulders. This stretches the side of the neck. You can also drop your head from one side to the other, to strengthen the muscles on the side of the neck.

For your lower back- Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and place your hands on your lower back, with your fingers facing downwards and gently push your hips forward and downwards

If you are having problems with your upper body and need some exercises to loosen everything up, visit us and make an appointment!

Hey Rehab Specialists, can you guys please give me some tips for lifting heavy objects?
Funnily enough, that’s what our Tuesday Tips are on today!

When you go and try to lift objects, do you just try to pick it up with your upper body strength? This could be because you want to show off all the work you have been doing at the gym for your upper body.

Today we are going to give you some tips to make sure that when you lift your next object of any weight, you can reduce the chance of injuring yourself. During heavy lifting it can be common to rely on our backs to lift the load. Consistently lifting incorrectly or beyond your capacity could result in injuries to various parts of your body acutely or over time.

Before you start your lift, assess the weight and size of the object and remember you can ask for help if you need it! You want to make sure you are not lifting beyond your capacity. Make sure your path is clear of any obstacles, and you know where you are moving the object to.

Before you bend down to start your lift, make sure your feet shoulder-width apart, with one foot slightly ahead for better balance. It is important to lift from the legs! So bend your knees as you squat down to pick up your object, so as you rise you are lifting from the legs rather than relying on your back.

If possible, you can hug it close to your body to reduce strain on your back and arms. Make sure that if you need to take a break, do it!

If you follow these tips, you can help reduce your risk of injury while lifting heavier objects. This could be at home, in a work environment or out in public!

Make sure you play it safe and listen to your body!

Do you remember playing Spotlight when you were younger?

Today we have a different spotlight for you, we have a staff spotlight!

Who better to have a staff spotlight on than Brendon! Let's find out more about our amazing NSW State Manager!

Brendon works in our Sydney office as an Exercise Physiologist and Rehab Consultant, however he recently stepped up into a new role as NSW State Manager - Congrats Brendon!

When you think about Sydney, what do you think about it?

Do you think about the mountains and all the AFL and NRL teams?

Well that is exactly what Brendon thinks about, as he loves going for a mountain bike ride and watching the footy. But when those aren't an option, he can sneak away to a music gig before he gets a Steak (medium rare) with chips, salad and mushroom sauce and still have a smile on his face!

Brendon likes to start his morning by waking up at 5:30 and being at the gym by 6. Brendon has figured out that if you get your gym work done early, you can take it easier after work.

Since Brendon loves his footy, can you guess what his favourite season is?

You guessed it, the cold Winter season – the season of AFL and NRL!

Lastly, you want to know a fun fact about Brendon?

Brendon is a great cook!

Welcome to our first Tuesday Tips!

For the birth of Tuesday Tips, first up we will be talking about grip strength!

Grip strength is the ability to produce a sustained force while you are gripping, this can be used through making a fist as well as a pincer type grip.

Something that you might not know or think about is that having a stronger grip strength is associated with positive health outcomes as well as higher upper body strength. Having a higher grip strength may also help to reduce hand or wrist pain.

Having a stronger grip strength is also important as it can make everyday tasks easier. Tasks such as tying shoelaces, opening doors, lifting objects, opening jars and doing things around the house can all use your grip strength.

If you are wondering how we can help improve your grip strength, we can recommend a few different exercises. Exercises like:

Weighted farmer walks

Wrist curls

Squeezing a stress ball

Another good thing about having good grip strength is that you will be an unstoppable person when it comes to thumb wars! Contact us if you want a grip like a Gorilla!
