Hayley masks their struggles so well in dance class that teachers can't tell. But when they get home, they collapse — sometimes missing days of school.

The 2026 school year Future of Education Equity Fund is now open for applications.

Eligible families who apply early can receive funds in January to use on back-to-school items. The Equity Fund provides a one-off, annual payment to low-income families living in the ACT to help cover education expenses like school uniforms, excursions, sport equipment, activities, and music lessons.

The Equity Fund is open to eligible families with students from preschool to year 12 at all schools across Canberra.

This is so important to understand. I know for my youngest screens were a tool for her to regulate. She could block out everything around her while playing Minecraft or watching a YouTube video. Banning screens or even limiting their use can have the opposite effect that you want for some children.

When you ban screens as a consequence, it can feel like the quickest way to 'make the lesson stick'.

But for many young people (especially ND children), screens are a regulating tool — so removing them often ramps up overwhelm rather than reducing the behaviour.

Today’s post looks at why screen bans tend to backfire and what actually supports learning and regulation instead.

If you missed yesterday’s post on natural and logical consequences, it helps explain why consequences that don’t match the behaviour rarely lead to meaningful change.

Although I am without a car tutoring sessions have continued. It takes me a little longer to get to and from but it’s working… I still have a few spots available if you’re looking for a tutor.
