Today is International Volunteer Day. We wanted to say a huge thank you to every St John ACT volunteer for their incredible dedication to making our community a safer place to be.

From early mornings to late nights, they show up ready for anything - whether its handing out sunscreen or responding to a cardiac arrest. This year, they have saved lives, protected the vulnerable and shown care and compassion at every turn.

St John ACT would not exist without each and every one of our incredible volunteers. Canberra is better because of their service. 💚

November was non-stop! As we race towards the finish line of 2026, we had a month jam-packed with events.

In November, our amazing volunteers contributed over 1,600 hours at 74 different events:

✅They shook their hips at Ricky Martin
✅They Giggled with Jimmy Rees
✅Joined the fun at SouthFest
✅Hung out with Spiderman at the Geek Markets

November was also a month of celebration. We held our annual awards night and marked some incredible service milestones. Some of our staff and volunteers also attended the Chancellors Dinner, celebrating 100 years of youth at St John. Our final group of volunteers for 2025 graduated in November too, making our total volunteer cohort 240 amazing humans.

At HQ, our training team have been hard at work and in November we ticked over our 10,000th training participant for 2025.

Last week, we held our annual Awards Night and we recognised some of our volunteers who have reached significant service milestones with St John.

The incredible recipients this year have collectively contributed:

⏰ 29,574 volunteer hours
✅ 180 years of service

Their commitment represents countless moments of care, compassion, and lifesaving support.

While these awards honour a select group, every volunteer plays a vital role in making our community safer and stronger. Thank you to all our volunteers for everything you do you, are the heart of St John ACT! 💚

At St John ACT, we know how important it is for families to have access to basic first aid supplies. Our relationship with Roundabout Canberra has taught us that many families in Canberra struggle to afford these essentials.

We reached out to ACT Veterans Rugby and Rolfe Property Services to see if they could help. Thanks to their generosity, we were able to provide 130 Tiny Tots First Aid Kits for Roundabout Canberra to distribute to local families in need. Each kit contains simple but vital items that can make a big difference in an emergency. For many families, these kits provide peace of mind and resources they might otherwise go without.

A heartfelt thank you to ACT Veterans Rugby Club and Rolfe Property Services for making this possible.

Today, St John Ambulance ACT supported the National Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial.

We were honoured to contribute to this important event, standing in memory of all the men and women who served our country with courage and sacrifice. Their legacy reflects our commitment to service, care, and community.

We honour the enduring spirit of those who served. Lest we forget.

October was another busy month here at St John ACT.

🙌🏼 Our team of volunteers attended 57 events
⏳ Collectively, they contributed over 950 hours of service to the community
💚 We launched the 2025 StreetBeat Campaign in partnership with Service One Mutual
💓 Championed Restart a Heart Day alongside ACT Ambulance & ACT Fire Services
🚐 Welcomed 2 new vehicles to our fleet
🩹 Our trainers taught over 730 people life-saving first aid skills
🎓 Helped 281 students complete a First Aid in Schools session

We are so proud of our amazing team of staff and volunteers and everything they do to make our community safer, stronger and more prepared!

Today is Restart a Heart Day and we marked the day with the launch of the 2025 campaign. This combined initiative with One Mutual aims to put a publicly accessible defibrillator in every suburb in Canberra.

We also teamed up with the ACT Emergency Services Agency for a CPR demonstration, showing people just how simple, and critical, performing CPR can be.

Today was a reminder that lifesaving skills belong to everyone and that a prepared community is a powerful one. Let’s keep the momentum going: learn CPR, know where your nearest defib is, and be ready to restart a heart.

🌿 It’s Mental Health Week 🌿

This week is a powerful reminder that mental health is just as important as physical health and knowing how to support someone in distress is a skill we should all feel confident in.

Just like CPR or treating a wound, knowing basic mental health first aid equips us to respond confidently and compassionately when someone is struggling.

At St John ACT, we offer First Aid for Mental Health courses that teach you how to:
🧠 Recognise signs of mental health challenges
💬 Start supportive conversations
🤝 Connect people with professional help

Last weekend, our Bicycle Emergency Response Team (BERT) completed their re-accreditation.

As well as a theoretical assessment, they were required to complete a series of practical tasks on the bikes to ensure they can respond to patients promptly and safely when needed.

The BERT team are an excellent addition to our response capabilities at events like Skyfire where access to patients by foot or car is much harder and slower.

Congratulations to our wonderful BERT team, we appreciate your dedication!
