Today, St John Ambulance ACT supported the National Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial.

We were honoured to contribute to this important event, standing in memory of all the men and women who served our country with courage and sacrifice. Their legacy reflects our commitment to service, care, and community.

We honour the enduring spirit of those who served. Lest we forget.

October was another busy month here at St John ACT.

🙌🏼 Our team of volunteers attended 57 events
⏳ Collectively, they contributed over 950 hours of service to the community
💚 We launched the 2025 StreetBeat Campaign in partnership with Service One Mutual
💓 Championed Restart a Heart Day alongside ACT Ambulance & ACT Fire Services
🚐 Welcomed 2 new vehicles to our fleet
🩹 Our trainers taught over 730 people life-saving first aid skills
🎓 Helped 281 students complete a First Aid in Schools session

We are so proud of our amazing team of staff and volunteers and everything they do to make our community safer, stronger and more prepared!

Today is Restart a Heart Day and we marked the day with the launch of the 2025 campaign. This combined initiative with One Mutual aims to put a publicly accessible defibrillator in every suburb in Canberra.

We also teamed up with the ACT Emergency Services Agency for a CPR demonstration, showing people just how simple, and critical, performing CPR can be.

Today was a reminder that lifesaving skills belong to everyone and that a prepared community is a powerful one. Let’s keep the momentum going: learn CPR, know where your nearest defib is, and be ready to restart a heart.

🌿 It’s Mental Health Week 🌿

This week is a powerful reminder that mental health is just as important as physical health and knowing how to support someone in distress is a skill we should all feel confident in.

Just like CPR or treating a wound, knowing basic mental health first aid equips us to respond confidently and compassionately when someone is struggling.

At St John ACT, we offer First Aid for Mental Health courses that teach you how to:
🧠 Recognise signs of mental health challenges
💬 Start supportive conversations
🤝 Connect people with professional help

Last weekend, our Bicycle Emergency Response Team (BERT) completed their re-accreditation.

As well as a theoretical assessment, they were required to complete a series of practical tasks on the bikes to ensure they can respond to patients promptly and safely when needed.

The BERT team are an excellent addition to our response capabilities at events like Skyfire where access to patients by foot or car is much harder and slower.

Congratulations to our wonderful BERT team, we appreciate your dedication!

More than 15,000 Australians have learnt vital first aid skills through two of our free e-Learning courses - Learner Driver First Aid and Truckie First Aid.

These courses equip drivers with skills that could be critical to saving a life if an accident occurs on the road.

In the ACT, Learner Drivers who complete the course receive 5 hours towards their required driving hours.

August was another busy month here at St John ACT!

84 of our amazing volunteer crew gave a collective 977 hours of their time, helping their community to be safer and more supported at 38 events across the territory.

Our incredible training team empowered 862 people with the skills and confidence they need to act if an emergency situation occurs.

We also taught 67 students basic first aid skills through our First Aid in Schools program.

Together, we’re creating a safer, stronger ACT. 🙌

We are proud to have partnered with Service One Mutual and Capital Chemist Group, deploying Publicly Accessible Defibrillators into to the Canberra community as part of the initiative. So far, we have installed 18 defibrillators in suburbs all over the Capital. Swift access to these life saving devices is a critical factor in improving survival rates from cardiac arrest outside of hospital.

Yesterday we were welcomed to Government House where two of our dedicated and long serving members, Wade and Lauren, were admitted into the Order of St John by Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia.

During the ceremony, Josh Ray was presented with a Save a Life award for the selfless and courageous action he took earlier this year; providing life saving first aid treatment to a young school student who was critically injured when he was hit by a car.

We would like to thank Wade and Lauren for their significant service and contribution to St John ACT and Josh for his act of bravery.

At St John ACT, we are surrounded by individuals whose generosity of spirit is truly inspiring, it's a privilege to be part of such an extraordinary community

We were fortunate enough to be invited to participate in a mass casualty incident training exercise this month.

Some of our volunteers had the chance to work closely with trainee paramedics and ACT Fire & Rescue in a training simulation, allowing everyone involved to put their skills to the test in a realistic situation.

A big thank you to everyone involved in putting the day together, it was a huge success and a valuable experience for our team.
